TITANIC

We've all heard of the movie Titanic. Most of us refer to it as the epic, sad romance,

disaster movie with the boat. Titanic is a story based on real life about a boat sinking in the

middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was on its way to New York City, but that destination was never

reached when Titanic hit a large ice berg which caused the ship to basically break into two pieces

with all of its passengers aboard. There was a total of 2,228 passengers on the Titanic, within

those 2,228 people was Rose DeWitt Bukater. Rose was a young women who was seventeen-

years- old when she went on Titanic. Her family was trying to make it over to America to get her

married to her fianc Caledon. You can tell a lot about Rose and her strengths as the movie

progresses. Rose's three strengths are Analytical, Adaptability, and Self-Assurance.

From the very begging of the film you find that Rose is analytical. Her eyes are always

scanning and observing everything. She is the quiet type, with a loud mind that is thinking about

all that she is seeing. She is not the typical girl who seems to believe everything she reads, she is

analytical and uses logic to prove her point. When she first arrives to the Titanic she voiced her

opinion saying that the ship was like many others that she had traveled in, she didnt see a

difference or have a clue on why they advertised it be known as the Unsinkable Ship.

There is a scene in the movie when her family is having dinner with some of the builders

of titanic, and they started to talk about lifeboats. She then asked how many lifeboats they had

aboard and Mr. Andrews answered that they had 20 lifeboats that would hold about fifty-five

passengers each, but that if anything were to happen they would be able to put all passengers on

the lifeboats, and that she should not worry about that because the chances of something

happening where they had to evacuate the ship were slim. Rose was quick to answer stating that

you couldn't fit all of the 2,228 passengers on 20 lifeboats, and started to have doubts about the,

Unsinkable Ship. Rose was using logic and analytical skills throughout the whole movie. Most

of all the scenes in the movie show that she made decisions based on logic, and not her heart or

any other element that was not with reason. Her character proved to be systematic and logical

and you see that transport through the actions she takes.

Rose was a leader, because she kept things real and did not sugar coat anything. Leaders

like this are successful and can quickly come up with realistic solutions for problematic

situations. She proved many times that she was going to take action based on what she believed

was right and not let anyone come between that When the ship started to sink, Rose used logic to

survive and she succeeded because she came out of that tragedy alive.

Rose's character has strong adaptability skills. Adaptability is a great skill to have as a

leader because when youre a leader everything seems to be changing constantly. Mastering

adaptability will make you a powerful leader. When she met Jack, he was everything that she

wasn't. He was not even in the same social circle as her, or even on the same floor. She was first

class, and he was third. They were so opposite but she adapted to his lifestyle pretty quickly, the

way he talked, dresses, and acted did not stop her from wanting to be with him. She adapted

quickly to his lifestyle. When the Titanic was sinking she should have been the first one on the

lifeboats along with her family to be saved, but instead she went to rescue Jack who was locked

down at the very bottom of the ship because he was punished with a crime that he did not

commit. When Titanic split into two parts and sank down into the water, her and Jack had to

adapt to the dramatic change of the ice cold water.

Hours passed before one of the lifeboats came back to see if anyone was still alive that

they could save. Rose was luckily not in the water, she was on old door that was floating up in

the water, and she looked over and saw that Jack had frozen to death. She had to adapt to the

change and save herself. She kissed him goodbye and then swam over to nearby whistle to call

over the lifeboat to rescue her. From then on she had to adapt to a whole new life. Her life

changed from one moment to the next. She adapted quickly and kept moving forward with her

life.

As we have addressed many times in class, if you are not Self-Assured then it is very

hard to put your best foot forward. Sure, we don't always have to feel confident every day. But as

a leader for ninety-percent of the time we must. Rose's Self-Assurance is hard to find at first. At

the beginning of the movie, she portrays as the quit and mysterious type, as the movie unfolds,

her actions of Self-Assurance break through. She voices her opinion even thought it might not be

the most polite thing to say. She sticks to her beliefs and holds firm to them.

As Jack dies of hypothermia, he makes her promise that she will do all of the things they

said they would do when they made it to America. Horseback riding, flying a plane, having a lot

of kids and mastering the art of painting. She takes initiative and makes that promise that she will

do everything that they once said they would do together. After he passes away she makes sure

and believes in herself and is Self -Assured and able to follow through with her promise to Jack.

Being a leader is not an easy task. One must use their strengths to put their best foot

forward, but even when you do, you might not succeed all times. Rose did not always succeed in

all three of her strengths, but she lived and she learned. I believe that Rose used her three greatest

strengths to the best of her abilities. Analytical, Adaptability, and Self- Assurance are great

strengths to possess and can make one a powerful leader. Many induvial may not think a

seventeen-year-old teenager, like Rose to be considered a leader because of her age, gender, or

lack of life experience. After writing this paper and analyzing the movie, I think that anyone can

be a great leader if they set their mind to it, and if they apply their strengths to their greatest

potential.
