Two advantages mud has over water as a drilling fluid.

The mud is denser than water, so it can build higher pressures in the bore hole, which
helps reduce groundwater flow into the bore hole and helps prevent collapse of uncased
zones. Thick drilling mud can create a thin zone of low K materials on the wall of the
bore hole, which helps limit flow to or from the bore.

Drilling mud is more viscous than water and returns drill cuttings to the surface more
easily.
