Imagery is the name
given to the elements
in a poem that spark
off the senses.
Images need not be only
visual; any of the five
senses (sight, hearing,
touch, taste, smell) can
respond to what a poet
writes.

Senses help convey a
message to readers by
providing a strong image
in their heads.
Pick any topic you like
and brainstorm sensory
images for that topic.
For example:

Topic: Ice Cream

Taste: smooth, cold, melt in your mouth, sweet

Touch: Wet, cold, slimy, frozen

Sight: mountains, white as snow (vanilla), little


crevices, puddles (when it melts)
For example:

Smell: sweet, minty (mint chocolate chip)

Hearing: plop, splat (when it falls on the floor)
