April 15, 2013, marked the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, the worlds oldest
annual marathon. As normal the Marathon began in Hopkinton just west of the city of
Boston. With 23,000 people participating, the Elite women began @ 9:32 a.m. The Elite
men and the first caral of 1,000 wave of normal runners. Rita Jeptoo from Kenya,
traversed 8 Bay State towns and cities first in 2:26:25 and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia
beat the field of men in 2:10.22. At 2:49 that afternoon, as 5,600 runners were still
on the course and thousands lined it, two pressure-cooker bombs, that were packed
with shrapnel and other materials and stuffed inside of backpacks, were hidden in the
crowd. They exploded within mere seconds of each other on Boylston Street, the famous
finish to the Boston.
Casualties
The Hunt
Both suspects were apprehended within 102 hours of the bombs being
detonated. The entire city of Boston was shut down during the hunt. All
sorts of Government Agencies were brought in to assist or take charge in
this manhunt. During the manhunt the 2 suspects shot and killed an on duty
campus police officer, kidnapped a man and stole his car, and engaged in a
firefight where the older brother was killed. The other brother was later
found in nearby Watertown in the backyard of a resident hiding in their boat.
Who Did it
The Tsarnaev Brothers -
One of the most evocative images of Boston 2014 will be Meb, cresting Heartbreak Hill, deep in fatigue and responding with a
clenched fist of salute to the roars of U-S-A! This was not jingoism; this was a simple display of solidarity, of empathy, of support for
Boston Strong and for Meb Strong.
