Mahsuri was the daughter of a couple who moved
from their native Phuket to the island of Langkawi in search
of a better life. She was the most beautiful in all of Langkawi
and married the warrior Wan Darus (or Wan Derus). As was
required of him, her husband had to go to war with the
attacking Siamese, leaving Mahsuri behind to fend for
herself. It was during this time that Mahsuri befriended a
young traveller named Deraman. The village chief's wife
Wan Mahura was jealous of Mahsuri's beauty. She spread a
rumour that Mahsuri was unfaithful and was having an affair
with Deraman in the absence of Wan Darus. Eventually the
rumours grew strong enough that the villagers openly
accused her of adultery. Mahsuri pleaded her innocence, but
no one believed her.
Mahsuri was to be tied to a tree (or pole) and stabbed
to death but it didn't work. After every execution attempt
failed, Mahsuri told them to kill her with her family's 'keris'.
When she was stabbed, white blood flowed from the wound,
signifying her innocence. Some birds flew above her to
cover her body. With her dying breath, Mahsuri cursed
Langkawi to have seven generations of bad luck. The
kingdom was soon taken over by Siam. The villagers at
Padang Mat Sirat burned their own paddy fields rather than
BUJANG SENANG
Bujang Senang crocodile said to incarnate Iban warrior named
Simalungun. He killed and cursed be a crocodile and he vowed to
kill all the generations mistreat them. Simalungun is a Iban
warrior known around Skrang river, Sarawak. His greatness is

LAKE CHINI DRAGON
Local legend tells a tale of a wandering group of Jakun
tribesmen who cleared the land to grow food crops. During
their labour, an old woman appeared who proclaimed that
she was the rightful owner of the land and that her
permission should have been sought before any trees were
felled. The Jakun humbly apologised, whereupon the woman
allowed the men to continue their work. Before departing,
however, she planted her walking stick in the ground as a
mark of her ownership, telling the men never to remove it.
The men continued with their work, but some time
later they heard one of their dogs barking and snarling at a
decaying log. One of the Jakun threw his stick at the log, but
immediately a torrent of blood issued from the log causing
the man to run back to his friends in fear. His friends
thought he was possessed by demons and tried to keep
away from him. However, the barking continued so the
entire tribe returned to investigate the log. A spreading pool
of blood had formed around the log.
In fear they hurled their own sticks at the sight,
whereupon a dark cloud gathered in the sky. The thunder
roared, the lightning flashed and a torrent of rain fell from
the sky. The men grabbed their belongings and ran for
cover, but in the chaos one of them pulled the old woman's
stick from the ground - the very stick which they had been
warned not to touch. Immediately a fountain of water
poured from the hole made by the stick. The water flowed
for many years, thereby creating the lake of Tasik Chini. The
tribe realised then that the log was actually the dragon
called Naga Seri Gumum.
THE PRINCESS OF LEDANG MOUNTAIN
According to Malay belief in the old days, there was a
beautiful jin princess who lived on top of Ledang Hill and
was called Puteri Gunung Ledang. The princess had seven
sisters originated from Java. Her other relatives in Malay
peninsular were Puteri Gunung Banang in Batu Pahat, Puteri
Gunung Panti in Kota Tinggi and Puteri Gunung Beremban in
border of Johor and Pahang.
According to the Malay story told verbally, Puteri
Gunung Ledang stayed at the top of Gunung Mahligai
(Mahligai Mountain). She had a lover who lived on top of
Gunung Rundok (Rundok Mountain). Every night the
mountain top of Gunung Rundok will approach near Gunung
Mahligai, and the two lovers met and spend the time until
early morning. After a few years, one night, while spending
the time together, they did not realised the time had passed
early morning. The act was against the curse of jins causing
the mountain top of Gunung Rundok slanted until today.
The mountain top of Gunung Rundok cannot
straightened itself. So the jin prince have to stay at the top
of Gunung Mahligaitogether with Puteri Gunung Ledang and
were married.
After the wedding, they went for honeymoon to Pulau
Besar (Besar Island) at the Straits of Melaka. One day, while
Puteri Gunung Ledang was sewing under a coconut tree at
the seaside, her husband came from behind to surprise her
jokingly. She was shocked and accidently stabbed her
husband's hand with her sewing pin. Immediately, her
husband fell to the ground and died, as it was a curse on
him to die if stabbed by a pin. She was very sad and hug her
husband's body and said:
"Oh my love, Putera Mambang,I swear I will never marry
again until I die."
She went back to Gunung Ledang soon after.
