Lecture 3:
Matlab Session - Flutter

G. Dimitriadis

AERO0032-1, Aeroelasticity and Experimental Aerodynamics, Lecture 3 1

Matlab tutorial example
7 Set up the quasi-steady equations of motion
for a pitching and plunging 2D flat plate.
7 Plot the variation of the natural frequencies
and damping ratios of your system with
airspeed.
7 Write a code to determine the flutter speed.
7 Plot the variation of flutter speed with pitch
stiffness

Parameter values
7 You can choose your own system
parameters or use the following:
c=0.25m, xf/c=0.4, material=aluminium, plate
thickness=0.02m
Uncoupled, undamped frequencies:
7 Plunge= 2Hz
7 Pitch=8Hz
Air density: =1.225 Kg/m3.

Challenge
7 If you finish the tutorial example and have
time to spare:
7 Repeat everything using unsteady
aerodynamics.
7 Compare the quasi-steady to the unsteady
flutter predictions.
