Prerequisite:
BCEE 342 Structural Analysis I

Course Objective:
To develop basic understanding of the behaviours and the general analysis methods of statically
indeterminate systems. The skill to be taught in BCEE 343 is Problem Analysis: The ability to identify,
formulate, research and solve complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusion.

Textbook:
Structural Analysis by: A. Kassimali, Fifth Edition (SI Edition), 2015.

Course Evaluation:
The course will be graded on the following basis:
Assignments 10%
Midterm test 20% (Feb 10, 2016)
Final exam 70%

Assignments:
Students should try and solve the assigned problems before the tutorials, and then discuss the difficulties
during the tutorial time. The assignments should be submitted at the beginning of the Tutorial time on the
due date. LATE ASSIGNMENT: there are deductions for late assignments as follows
One day after the due date: 30%.
Two days late, the assignments are not accepted unless there are legitimate reasons.
Assignments slip under the instructors office door are not accepted and ignored.
If your assignment is late or not hand in to the instructor at the time of collection, it is your responsibility
to hand in to the marker. The information about the marker is given in this course outline. Please contact
the marker, first, about the late assignment accordingly, before talking with the instructor.

Midterm tests:
There will be one midterm test on Wednesday, Feb 10, 2016 during the lecture time.

Course Content:
Chapter 13, Method of consistent Deformations
Chapter 14, Influence Lines for Statically Indeterminate Structures
Chapter 15, Slope-Deflection Method
Chapter 16, Moment-Distribution Method
Chapter 17, Introduction to Matrix Structural Analysis

Attributes to be taught:
In this course the following attributes will be covered:

1. Problem analysis: An ability to use appropriate knowledge and skills to identify, formulate,
analyze, and solve complex engineering problems in order to reach substantiated conclusions.

2. A knowledge base for engineering: Demonstrated competence in university level mathematics,

natural sciences, engineering fundamentals, and specialized engineering knowledge appropriate to
the program.

These attributes will be assessed through assignment, midterm test, and/or final exam of this course.
