National standard for drinking water quality

(revised on December 2000, second version January 2004)
We have conducted two lab tests which are total suspended solids(TSS) and also
sampling test. Only the results of the sampling test can be compared to the national standard
for drinking water quality because there isnt any value for TSS for us to compare with. The
only criteria we managed to compare with the national standard for drinking water quality are
the turbidity and the ph value.

In the sampling test, we conducted a pH test on a water sample to be compared with

the national standard. We did the test three times and we got a pH value of 6.26, 6.25 and
6.27 respectively. Therefore the average value of pH we obtain is 6.26, but the required pH
value ranges from 6.5 to 9.0. So, our water sample needs to be treated slightly to increase the
pH value of the water. A neutralizing filter is used if drinking water is acidic (low pH). It is a
simple treatment device that raises the pH of water by adding a neutralizing material.
However, it should be noted that the neutralization process may increase water hardness.
Neutralizing filters are point-of-entry devices that raise water pH to neutral levels (around 7)
which reduces or eliminates plumbing corrosion problems. Calcium carbonate treats water
with a pH greater than 6 and synthetic magnesium oxide will treat water with a pH below
6.Untreated water flows through the filter, which is filled with calcium carbonate (limestone)
or a synthetic magnesium oxide medium. This material dissolves in the water and raises its
pH level.

The second criteria we compared is the turbidity of the water sample. We prepared a
water sample of four and obtained a value of 1.49 NTU, 1.40 NTU, 1.53 NTU and 0.38 NTU
respectively. So, the average value of turbidity for our water sample is 1.20 NTU. The
maximum acceptable value for turbidity according to the national standard is 5.0 NTU and
our results are way lower than the maximum allowed value.

We can conclude that the physical properties of our water sample is suitable to be
used as drinking water after it has undergone treatment.
