HVA Observation
Hardin Valley Academy obviously has different procedures than HVE. Theres a lot more
students and teachers. The teachers I got assigned to were really good at what they do. They
explain everything very well and are open to questions from the students in their classrooms.
Teaching High School is definitely not what I expected but it worked well for everyone.
On Tuesday April 18th, I was assigned to Ms.Kissinger. Although she didnt do the
teaching, there was a good person to be in her place. Her intern was very demonstrative and
made sure the rest of the class was following her. If the students had questions about something
they were reviewing for, she would make the time to answer them. Ms.Kissinger also helped in
that process. That class also helped shape the classrooms environment. Once the bell rung, the
students sat where they were supposed to, and sat quietly. The students really showed that they
were ready to learn. Since it was the week before the TNReady EOCs, they were reviewing and
brushing up on questions that would most likely be on the EOC. The only thing that mightve
upset the process of learning, is the fact that they were in the chemistry lab. I think an actual
classroom is most effective, although it shouldnt matter. I say this from experience, its better
when the lab is reserved for doing an actual lab assignment. Other than that, everything was just
On Thursday April 20th, I was assigned to Mr.Quick. It was an Honors Chemistry I class.
You can really see the difference in the students and in the teacher. By the first bell at 8:20, most
of the students were already in class. When the last bell rung, no one appeared to be late and no
one was absent. The teacher started with the lesson right away, and the students were very
attentive. This class was also reviewing for EOC that was the following week, and Mr.Quick
made a group project for reviewing. He assigned every students a number 1-10, then they all
gathered. For example all the 1s would be in a group, all the 2s would be in a group, etc. They
used this tool to help each other choose which questions on the latest test they needed to go over.
It took them a while to write them down on a board, but they got there. Once everyone was done,
Mr.Quick assigned questions to each group. They would then find the answers and present them
to the class. The students that were presenting, were very loud and clear and you could tell that
they knew what they were talking about. You could tell that they really take the time to study and
know the subject. I think Mr.Quick does a very good job teaching his class. On the other hand,
just like Ms.Kissingers class, they were in the chemistry lab. This might just be me and they
way I experience labs, but other that, I really like Mr.Quick and his methods of teaching.
I wanted to observe Science because its a subject that I really like, if I was ever to be a
high school teacher, it would be English or History. Besides that, I think mostly focused on
