Unit 34 assignment 3

Ciaran Morton

Diary

Introduction

In the document I am going to document, everything did to create the

animation in this assignment. I am also going to cover a range in this
document listed below:

Creating the characters

In this animation, I had to start by creating the characters and other

assets for the animation. I started by getting the required stage size and
then scaling the character sizes I needed, this was to ensure the
characters I created were the right size and to scale with all the other
assets. I also scaled the characters ahead of time to avoid scaling them
down and having them compressed as they are expanded to size.
The image to the right is the
stage size for the main character;
I have also made a stage size for
the other two characters in my
animation. The image to the right
shows the size of the main
character (166 * 468 pixels) I
also set the resolution to 250
pixels per centimetre. The pixel
per centimetre was set much
higher than standard as this
image is so small I needed to
input a high resolution or the
overall animation would be a low
grainy quality.

This is the stage for the other two characters. I am going to use the same
stage and template for both of these characters are they are both very
similar and this will save on time when creating the animation.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the right is one

of the duplicated stages I am
going to use to create the
other two characters in the
animation.
The image to the right is the
specifications to the canvas to
the two characters; these are
the exact numbers to 1/4th by
1/4th of the canvas. I have also
used the same 250 pixel per
centimetre resolution as the
other character.

This image shows the second and

third character stage size (156
*200 pixels). The resolution on
both of these is 250 pixels per
centimetre and the RGB colour is
16 bit as this is the highest option
I can go while still being able to
use ALL the tools on the image.

Above are the overall sizes to the characters that I need, I am going to be
cutting these characters up into different aspects, this is to that I can use
the bone tool on them to create all of the animations.
The image to the left shows the folders that I
created to keep all of the character assets in
the right place and so that I know which
image is for which character.

After looking closely at the canvas for the main character I found that the
resolution I have chosen is quite low, this is bad as the image quality will
be quite bad, this will lower the quality of the entire animation. I expected
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

the quality to be low due to the actual size of the required canvas. I would
create a bigger canvas but this would go against the brief and I would fail
the entire unit.

The overall length of the main character is 1.87 cm the overall width is
0.67. This means that I am going to have to portion out the space for the
legs, torso, arms and head. This is so that I can create a character with
individual layers then cut the layers into custom-made stages for each
one, then export the custom layers as .png images so that they will be
compatible with the Flash document.
For the main character, the head is going to be 1/4th height of the stage
then the rest of the stage is going to be divided by the torso/arms and the
legs.
By dividing the stage for the main character, I found that the head stage
is going to be 150 by 166 pixels, the torso, arms are going to be 234 by
166 pixels, and the legs are going to
be 234 by 166 pixels.
The image to the right is the stage for
the head of the main character this
has been sized up in the notes about
the character sizes above.

(14/2/17) work below:

To help with the creation of the main character, I am going to look up a

rough outline of a character and paste it on the main character canvas;
this is so that I get the right size4 ratio for the head, body, arms and legs
of the character.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the right is the

outline/image that I am going to use for
the main character.
I am only going to be using the outline to
the right, as this is the best one/the most
detailed one to use. I still need to create
arms for the main character
after this, as the template does
not include arms.
The image to the right shows,
the newer cropped and saved
template I will use.

The image to the right shows

that the template that I found needs
to be scaled up to fit the stage and
the required character size.

The image to the

right shows the
up-scaled image
that fits the stage
and preferred
character
specifications
better.

To make this a bit easier, I am going to remove the white background

attached to the character outline as shown to the right.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

As the image to the right shows, I got rid of the white

background using the select tool and hitting backspace
on the keyboard.
Now I am going to select different parts of the character
with the select tool and put them into different layers so
that later on I can divide them up into separate
documents and use the bone tool to animate the
character together on Flash.

The image to the left is the tool I used to get rid

of the background.

The image to the left shows the select tool that I

used to divide the image into different
segments/layers.

Before dividing the image up, I used the new page

tool on the bottom of the image to the left I decided
to create all of the pages and named them all in
advance.

The image to the left shows

that I locked all of the layers
and I am going to unlock
them when I need them. For
now, I am going to find a
skin colour to use on the
character. I am also going
to note the colour that is a
few shades darker so that I can use a small
amount of shading to add realism to the character.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the left shows the

colour that I am going to use for
the skin.

The image to the left shows

the skin colour on the head of the character, I am going
to use the burn tool to create a slight shadow on
the back of the head to add depth to the character.

The image to the left shows the burn

tool.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the left shows

the effect of the burn tool
on the back of the
characters head, this shows
the colour change and how
the character looks better
than just being one solid
colour.

I am also going to put the skin

colour on the neck of the
character.
The image to the left shows that I
added colour and burned a portion
of the neck to suit the head style.
The head of the character is done
for now, I am going to move on to
the torso and lock the head
section so that I do not alter it by

accident.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

For the torso I made a simple red hoodie, therefore all I need to do is use a
bright red and burn the back of it slightly to suit the rest of the character
and add realism.
The image to the right shows the colour and burn effect that I added to
the torso.

Instead of getting rid of these lines, I am

going to use them to add a 30% burn
patches to the layer in order to create a
3D/depth aspect.
The image to the left is
the coloured and burned
torso; in the end, I used a
10% opacity burn.

I also fixed the neck by colouring in the top of the

shirt that were cut off by other guidelines that copied
over from other layers.

I am now going to move onto the legs, these are black on the storyboards
so I am going to create them grey so that I can use the burn tool to add
depth to them like the rest of the character.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

This is the character so far, instead of doing feet and shoes,

I am just going to do shoes, and this means that I am going
to delete the shoe layer.

The image to the left is the main character, this

shows the legs and feet finished, now I am
going to go online and find an arm to import
to this character so that the character
can have arms.

The image to the right shows that I was able to find the same
tutorial so the arm should be to scale.

The image to the right is a stage in taking the

arm off of the sketch and patching it into the
character.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

This is the next step in the patching.

This image is the fully patched arm, this

character is almost finished, all that is left
to do is the red hat I put on the storyboard, and this is
why the character has been bald so far.
I am going to find guidelines for the cap online and scale
it to the character.

The image to the left is the best guideline that I

could find; I am going to try to patch this over the
character as I patched the arm.

This is the finished first character; all of the assets are in

individual layers so I am going to copy the layers into individual
PhotoShop documents.

--UPDATE!I am going to merge the legs and shoes together as

this would be too much animation to move the legs and feet
separately.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the right

shows the head image, the
red section below it is to
blend the image and the
torso together.

All the images below are the

different assets in their own
document.

(*2 EXACTLY THE

SAME!)
This is the first character,
this took two sessions to create as there are a lot
more parts to it than the other two characters that are three parts (body
and who arms.)
Starting on second character:
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

This is the new stage size and other

aspects of the canvas for the second and
third character.

The image to the right shows the stage for the

second character.

(15/2/17) Work below:

Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

Today I am going to create the second and third character; I am

also going to start working on the other assets such as assets
in the animation and background for the animation.
The main tools that I am going to use in the creation of the
second and third character are the symbols highlighted on the
image to the left.
The tools that I selected on the image to the left are mainly the
basic tools; I have used ALL of these on the main character and
I know how to use most of the other tools on PhotoShop as well
due to previous experience.
For the second and third character, I am going to be lowering
the opacity for the brush tool when colouring the characters.
The new opacity will be 65%; this is to give the slightly
transparent look for the characters. Even though the
characters are transparent, I am still going to be able to use
the burn tool to add shadows and depth to the characters.

The image to the left shows the outline for

the character, I used the ellipses tool in the
shape
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

The image to the left shows the 65% opacity

layer on the body of the second character.
Now I am going to search for cartoon
vegetables, as this is what the character looks
like on the storyboards.

These are the images that I found, for this

assignment I am going to have to edit this
image slightly, for example I am going to
remove the watermarks from the images and
crop them into individual images. I am also
going to remove the white background from
each of them.

This is the body for the second character; this

has taken around 30/40 minutes to create.
Unit 34 assignment 3
Ciaran Morton

Now I am going to add the arms, these are quite simple as I created this
character to be simplistic so it would be easy to animate.

This is the image of the first/left arm; I can

duplicate and flip this layer to save time.

This is the finished second graphic, now I am going to

cut it into five different documents.
