Calculus Project -- Model of a volume of known cross-section

1. Define a region in the plane using two or more functions. At least one of the
functions must be nonlinear.

2. Using the table feature of a graphing calculator together with graph paper, or
using software, print a graph of the region that occupies a significant portion of a
standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper (or other material).

3. Using the region as a base, construct a solid of known cross-section. You may
use cross-sections that are squares, semicircles, right triangles with either the leg or
the hypotenuse in the region, or equilateral triangles. Use construction paper or
another medium to create the cross-sections that are perpendicular to the region.
Use enough cross-sections that the shape of the solid is clearly seen.

4. Use calculus to find the volume of the solid.
