Carter and Reagan:

Carter Questions:
1. Ford pardoned Nixon in order to, in his own words, help the country
move on.
2. Voters found Carter to be warm, and honest, after having had two
presidents they didnt trust and didnt feel comfortable with.
3. An overheated nuclear reactor released radiation into the
environment, which hurt both the United States plans to become
more dependent on alternative energy, but also Carters approval
ratings, as he had been a proponent of alternative energy.
4. Apartheid was a system of racial discrimination in South Africa.
5. Carter condemned the USSRs violations of human rights, which
hurt the Cold War dtente. He signed the Salt II Treaty, but it was
never ratified by the US.
6. The leaders of Egypt and Israel signed a treaty at the Camp David
Accords, which led to the some of the first instances of Arab-Isreali
peace.
7. Carter was seen as an ineffective leader, because he wasnt able to
handle the crisis.
Reagan Questions:
1. If people were paying less in taxes, they could invest more and
cause businesses to grow. This would in turn trickle down to the
average citizen, and give them more job opportunities.
2. The day of Reagans inauguration.
3. The Sandinistas were a socialist group who came to power in
Nicaragua in 1979.
4. The NSC went around Congress by providing arms to Iran, who then
provided support to the Sandinistas.
5. Perestrokia economic reforms, whereas glasnot openness to
political reforms (change in leadership, etc.)
6. With the implementation of those two policies, the US and USSR
warmed to each other a little.
7. By allowing people to express their opinions about government, but
then not responding to those concerns, it put Gorbachev in a tough
spot.
8. Following Gorbachevs resignation on December 25th, 1991, the
USSR dissolved on December 26th.
