    BostonfireandNewYorkCityfire.However,Bostonwillalwaysbeour

    nation'sfirstfiredepartment.BostonFireDepartment,establishedin1678,

    wasournationsfirstfiredepartment,andfortunatelybecomingthefirstpaid

    firedepartmentinAmerica,thankstoBenjaminFranklin.BostonFire

    Department,withoutadoubt,hasplayedahugeroleonfirefightingandhow

    wefightfirestoday,fromhavingafulltimecrew,havingmotorizedengines,

    andtheNFPAruleswefollow.

    BostonFirecurrentlyuptodatehas1,467uniformedpersonnel,35

    firestations,andatotalof70fireapparatusunits.Bostoncovers47.3

    squaremileswithapopulationof574,283.Toworkthisbigofanarea,and

    providethebestfireprotectionservices,theyhavesectionsofthecitydivided

    withthemostappropriatepiecesofapparatuscoveringthatarea,witha

    rankladderwithcertainofficersresponsiblefortheirarea.Withoutthis

    pre-plan,Bostonfirewouldntbeassafeasitistoday.

    BostonFirerevolutionizedfiretrucks,fromamanoperatedpump,horse

    poweredpumpers,towhatwehavetoday.Bostonreceiveditsfirstfire

    enginein1678,andnotonlywasitthefirstinboston,butthefirstin

    America.Asbostonfirestartedtogetmoreandmorefamous,otherstates
    startedtofollowintheirsteps.Manycitiesinotherstatesstartedtomake

    firedepartmentfulltime,ordersteampoweredengines,andenforcerulesor

    SOGSaswecallthemtoday.ItiscertainthatwithouttheBostonFire

    Department,wewouldnthavetherulesorenginesdepartmentusetoday.

    OnethingBostonFireiswidelyknownfor,wastheGreatBoston

    FireofNovember9th,1872.Thisfirewasresponsiblefor65acresbeing

    destroyed,whichwasofthemostvaluablebusinesspropertyofthecity.The

    totalnumberofbuildingsthatfellvictimtotheflameswas776,ofwhich709

    wereofbrick,granite,orstone,and67ofwood.Thevalueofallproperty

    destroyedwas$75,000,000[about$3.5billioncurrentdollars].

    Surprisingly,only30civiliansand18firefightershaddiedduringthistragic

    event.Basedonhowmodernthefiredepartmentwas,andtheseverityofthis

    fire,peoplethoughtthecountwouldhavebeenhigher.However,thisfire

    wascontainedinjustover12hours,whichhadoriginatedonSummerand

    Kingstonst.Boston,MA.ThisfireiswhatdefinedthecityofBoston,andthe

    BostonFiredepartment,andwhatitslegacyistoday.

    Department,becauseofhowfamousandwellorganizeditis.Peoplegoto

    collegeandwilltravelfromasfarasCaliforniatoworkforBostonFire.Itis
    withnodoubtBostonFirewillalwaysberememberedinthefireHistoryof

    theworld,andwhatitdidforAmerica.Bostonwasandalwayswillbe,our

    Nation'sFirst.
