Part of Lesson Description:

Part of Standard(s) and Learning Outcome(s):
By the end of the lesson students will be able to
- Measure the area of the classroom
- Use the correct measurement
- Find the right tiles for the room

Assessment Criteria:
Success criteria:
By the end of this lesson students can
- Measure rooms in the correct units
- Understand that the floor is m2 (using correct unit of
measurement)
- Be able to calculate area using length x width rules
o Breaking down irregular shapes into two separate shapes to
get the area

Opportunities to provide feedback:

Teaching focus: (chosen by supervising teacher)

Your personal choice of skill development:

- Fluently delivered
- Be confident
- Be prepared

Background to the learning:

This is the first unit of the measurement topic. This will be the first lesson,
introducing the students to area and measurement at a 6th grade level.

Teacher (teacher resources to inform your content knowledge:

NA
Pupil (identify pupils background and current knowledge):
Examining pre topic tests will help to determine where the students are at
before delivering the class. Some sections of the lesson will have to be
adapted on the spot as we will only find out on the day of these
difficulties.

Content of Lesson:
A. Introduction
- Talk about measurement
o How long do you think this ruler is? -> 1 metre
o How long do you think this line is? -> 1 centimetre
- Look at area
o How would we figure out how much space this square takes
up on the board if this side is 30cm and this side is 40cm?
Work together to have a couple of different rectangles
- *** Stress the measurement in CM2

B. Development
- Investigate walls of room, calculate the area of the floor

C. Consolidation and Practise

- Then, choose some tiles you would like to use for the floor and
calculate how many tiles that fit the floor of this room.
- Id like you to have a go at each of the tiles with the different
areas As you get further down the page, the area makes it more
difficult for you to figure out.

Extension activities:
- If youve finished, have a go at finding out the tiles needed, if we
didnt want them under the furniture.
o Measure all the furniture and take that away from the
equation

D. Closure
- Sit on the floor, ask a couple of people to share what theyve done
with their tiles.

Resources:
Measuring tape something to measure the room with
Timmys Tiles sheet
