THE LEGEND OF THE CONDOR

A long time ago, a young woman lived in the highlands near Quilotoa. One
day she saw a young man. He was tall and handsome. He wore a poncho
and he had a white scarf around his neck.

The next day the young woman saw the man again. She smiled. Then the
man came towards her and he kissed her. He took off his poncho. The
young woman saw a pair of huge wings. She screamed Aagh but the
birdman took her in his claws. He flew with her to his nest in the
mountains.

The village people saw the birdman with the young woman. They climbed
up the mountain to the condors nest. They found the young woman and
they took her home.

That night her parents locked her bedroom door. She cried all night. The
next day she did not eat or drink. She cried for three days.

Then one day, two wings grew out of her body. Suddenly her parents
heard a laugh. They ran to the young womans room. They unlocked the
door. They saw their daughter flying out of the window.
She flew towards the nest to her beloved.

Today, young women in the highlands are still a little afraid when a huge
condor flies over the mountain.
