Read the story below carefully and answer the questions that
follow.

Once, there lived a mother bird with her chicks on a tree. Every
morning, before the bird went to look for food, she would sing a song.
One day, when the bird had gone to look for food, one of her chicks
accidentally fell out of the nest. The poor chick could not fly. Luckily, it
landed on a bush so it was not hurt.

Just then, a cat saw it fall. The cat was about to attack it when
the mother bird came and stopped him. She begged for the chicks life
and asked the cat to take her instead. The cat agreed.

The mother bird then told the cat that he could eat her the next
day. She wanted to make sure her chicks were all right. Again the cat
agreed, but said if the mother bird did not come the next morning, he
would climb up the tree and eat all her chicks. The mother bird
promised. That night, the mother bird thought really hard on how to
save her life and the life of her chicks.

The next morning, she was so sad that she did not sing. A dog
that lived nearby had always being awakened to the mother birds sweet
voice. He went and asked the mother bird what was wrong. The sad
mother bird told him everything. The dog promised to help her.

When the cat came to the tree, he saw the dog sitting there.
The dog threatened to harm him if he harmed the mother bird. The cat
was afraid and promised to leave the mother bird and her chicks alone.

The mother bird was very grateful to the dog but she did not
know how to repay him. The dog asked her to just continue singing every
morning like she had always done. The mother bird gladly agreed.

Wei San : Hello, Melinder. Is something wrong? You look


terribly sad.

Melinder : Oh, Wei San, I am so glad to see you. Maybe you
