13TH /14TH MAY 2017 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Dear Parishioners,

In todays gospel, Jesus says, If you love me, you will

keep my commandments.

I dont know about you, but a part of me feels

uncomfortable at hearing these words from Jesus. They remind me a little too much of other
unpleasant scenarios, where someone takes advantage of another persons love and
manipulates it for self-serving purposes instead. If you love me, you should do whatever I
tell you to. If you love me, you should give me whatever I want. If you love me... etc. It is an
(unfortunately) all-too-familiar phrase in many abusive relationships, and most of us
wouldve seen the terrible harm that such emotional blackmailing could do to a person -
perhaps weve even experienced it ourselves, to a lesser or greater degree... which is why I
feel that its helpful to take a moment to try and enter into the heart of Jesus, and
understand better what hes REALLY saying.

If you love me... Jesus first said these words to his twelve disciples, during the last
Supper. He wasnt speaking to strangers, or a large crowd on the hillside, but to a select
group of his closest friends in the intimate setting of sharing a meal, whom he knows loved
him. In a similar way, Jesus is saying these words to us today in a context of a friendship; we
who are his close friends, who have walked with him perhaps all our lives, who he knows
love him. Or at least, we try to love him... but, just like the first disciples, our love is
imperfect. And just like the first disciples, we need to learn how to love, in the truer sense.
And so Jesus needs to show us again how to love: If you love me, you will keep my
commandment. He didnt say, THE Commandments (i.e. the Ten Commandments or the
Law of Moses); he said MY commandment. Read a few verses after in John 15, and we find
the words: This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.

Ah. So the sentence now reads, If you love me, then love one another as I have loved
you. THAT is a way of loving that is new to me and refreshing somehow, without a hint of
self-serving intentions. Jesus doesnt want us to love him by staying in an enclosed love-
bubble with Him, but hes inviting us to expand this love and share it with others in turn
and not just by loving in any old way, but with the highest degree of love, the same love that
Jesus loved us with.

Its a tall order. Yet one that He knows is possible, with the help of the Holy Spirit, the
Advocate whom the Father gives to us to be with us for ever!
God bless, Sr. Devy
