FEAST OF PENTECOST
Dear Parishioners
This weekend we celebrate the Feast
of Pentecost – the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit. Jesus returned to the Father in order
to send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, on his
followers. Pentecost brought about a new
community, the Church. It is the BIRTHDY
of the Church. It is our birthday as
Christians and followers of Christ. Let’s
rejoice and celebrate our Christian
birthday!
St Luke in today’s reading from the
Acts of the Apostle tells of the coming of the
Holy Spirit. As a result the disciples left the
Upper Room, where they had been hiding
in fear of their lives. They go out
FEARLESSLY to proclaim the Gospel to all
the world. What a change? They could not
have done this if they had not received
power from on high that is the Holy Spirit.
They are now filled with the message
Jesus had given them. They are determined
to proclaim his name. There is no fear or
hesitation – they speak like people
possessed – yes, possessed by the power of
the Spirit of God. This is the power, the
driving force, the message to be proclaimed
– Jesus is Lord – he suffered, died and rose
from the dead for the salvation of ALL
people. There is CLARITY about their
thinking on that first Pentecost morning.
There is no hesitation – not a hint of fear or
apology – they speak in all sorts of
languages – or at least the Holy Spirit was
‘translating’ their words so that all present
in Jerusalem could understand. It is the
power of the Holy
Spirit, there is no
turning back – the
task is clear – to
proclaim the Good
News of God’s
salvation for all
people everywhere and for all ages to
come. Now it is our turn to take up and
continue this task.
St Paul in his letter to the Corinthians
indicates that the Holy Spirit brings a
variety of gifts; that He works in all sorts of
different ways in different people. “Just as
the human body, though made up of
different parts, is a single unit because all
there parts, though many, make one body,
so it is with Christ”. So everyone has a role
to play, a task to perform that nobody else
can do but you!
In his letter to the Galatians, St Paul
tells us: “What the spirit brings is: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
trustfulness, gentleness and self-control”.
So this is our permanent calling to work for
those gifts in our own lives and be able to
share with others and our whole world.
Even if it is daunting, we can play our part
and then the “whole picture” can somehow
come together in the power of the Holy
Spirit. This leads us nicely into the life of
the Holy Trinity which we celebrate next
Sunday.

HOLIDAY WALK
On Bank Holiday Monday 28th May 2018
By popular request, we will walk around all
six parishes of the deanery.
You are very welcome to join us for all or
part of the walk and to collect sponsorships
for a particular charity or for the Haringey
Refugee House. We hope for a good turnout
from each parish. We will have different
activities and moments of prayer during the
day.
