Seventh Sunday of Easter
May 13, 2018
Happy Mother’s Day!
The second reading today is from the First Letter of John. It emphasizes the importance of love. It is a
coincidence that we listen to this Gospel on the same day that we (in the United States) celebrate Mother’s
Day. For many of us, our mother gave us our first profound experience of love. We pray in thanksgiving
today for all mothers, living and deceased. May their good example continue to inspire us toward
generosity, affection and other-centeredness.
The friars and the staff of the Shrine are very pleased to announce this year’s Pope Francis Award
Awardee: Regina L. Quinlan-Doherty, retired Justice of the Superior Court in Massachusetts. She has had
a very distinguished career, has led an exemplary life of service in Church and the community, and fully
appreciates the Shrine’s social justice ministries. Congratulations, Judge Quinlan-Doherty!

THE FRANCISCAN CHALLENGE
Q & A’s

Who lives in Holy Name Province?

There are 325 Franciscan Friars in Holy Name Province serving the people
of God in a wide variety of settings – colleges, parishes, urban ministry
centers and diverse social ministries along the East Coast. Today we
continue the mission of Saint Francis to make the Gospel message come
alive in our contemporary world. We live in cities, suburbs and rural
areas. Our backgrounds are diverse and our ministries are varied; most of
us serve in pastoral roles, while others work in education, social
ministry, administration and manual trades.

What is the mission of the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province?

The core of Franciscanism is in the living out of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ within the Church according to the rule of life proposed and
observed by Saint Francis of Assisi to preach this message to every
creature. This is our purpose and mission.

Our message is very simple:

God loves each of us totally and unconditionally.

What makes the Franciscan Friars different?

The Franciscan Friars have always been thought of as “of the people and
with the people”. Living in community is a core value and often helps the
Friars to put things in a more “down to earth” perspective. The Friars
never see themselves as better than anyone, and therefore they are not
usually judgmental and are very accepting of everyone, those who are in
the faith community and those who are not.

All Are Welcome is the usual core of Franciscan hospitality.

Mary, Mother of God

Annual Candles
Show your devotion to our Blessed Mother and ask her to intercede for your special intentions.
Choose to light your candle in Devotion to Mary, Mother of God; in Honor of a Living Loved One;
in Loving Memory of a Deceased Loved One; or for Your Own Special Intentions.
As a beacon of faith, hope, and love, your candle will illuminate the heart and soul of all those who enter our sacred space at
the Shrine. It will capture the heart of all those who kneel before her. It will burn round the clock for one year. The Franciscan Friars of the
Shrine will also pray for your intentions.
Only a limited number of candles are available.
Candles for the upcoming year must be purchased by Sunday, May 13th (Mother’s Day).
To reserve your candle, please request an order form by contacting
