Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace,
This weekend we hear from the Gospel of Luke: For behold, some are last who will be first,
and some are first who will be last.
The reversal-of-fortune theme plays itself out over and over again in terms of our Catholic
spirituality. St. Paul tells us that there is strength in weakness. Spiritual strength expresses itself in
darkness, in quiet, and in peacefulness. A brash, loud, flashy victory has nothing to do with the Spirit.
The most holy people we all know are not the ones who wield the most power, but rather the people
who dont have power and are accepting of that situation. Its a wonderful irony of life that a person
on her deathbed holds terrific power: we wait for what she says and we remember her words.
In twelve-step work, its when the person acknowledges complete powerlessness over a disease that
one begins to recover. In sports, a bad team quickly realizes the only chance they have is when the
other team gets over-confident, doesnt take its opponent seriously, and then lets its guard down. Look
around: you will see death-and-resurrection themes all around you.
This weekend we say good-bye to Fr. Dan Horan, OFM. Fr. Dan is a remarkably talented author,
teacher, scholar, athlete and social media guru. We especially thank him for his terrific work leading
the annual weekend retreats for the 20s/30s Young Adults group at the Shrine. As he takes his new
position on the faculty at the Chicago Theological Union, we wish him all the best. You can continue
to follow him on Facebook... be one of his 51,000 followers there! (Yes, 51,000. Not a typo.)

The LGBTQ Spirituality Group of

St. Anthony Shrine

LGBTQ Spirituality Group is a community of faith where

people are provided the opportunity to explore and express
their Catholic Christian spirituality and grow in hope with
one another, through shared experiences. We strive to
complement the faith dimensions of the wider Catholic
assembly of St. Anthony Shrine in four specific ways:
1. Prayer, 2. Sacraments, 3. Community, and 4. Service, thus
providing integration within the wider community of faith.
As Franciscans, we continue the long-standing ministry of
our founder, St. Francis of Assisi, who always reached out to
those on the margins of the community and welcomed them
with uncompromising love and acceptance. From the
writings of St. Francis' Letter to All the Faithful, "In that love
which is God, I Brother Francis, the least of your servants,
beg and implore all those to whom this letter comes, to hear
these words of our Lord Jesus Christ in a spirit of humility
and love, putting them into practice will all gentleness and
observing them perfectly. May God bless all those who
welcome those who have experienced marginalization in
society and church. Here at St. Anthony Shrine we strive
daily to put into action the commitment of our founder:
