JESUS, THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE We have learned from school that 2/3 of the world is water and also the body of an average person is more than 50% water. From this knowledge we conclude that water is very essential to earthly and physical life. Though water is physical, it is also a symbol that implies the same effects of the spiritual reality to the soul as the physical reality to the body. In the Exodus story in the First Reading, the Israelites clamored for water in the middle of the desert. They cannot continue with their journey to the land of promise without water to quench their thirst, so they quarreled with Moses on the issue of water. For St. Paul in the Second Reading, the living water is the Holy Spirit that continues to give grace to the believer. In the Gospel, the dramatic encounter of Jesus and the Samaritan woman in the well signifies the human thirst for love and acceptance and Gods thirst for the human heart. Being a woman of bad reputation (who had relationships with six men who were not her husbands) she avoided the crowd, thats why she came to the well at noon time. She thirsts for a lover who will truly accept and respect her, and here she met a truly loving man, Jesus Christ. This woman is a real and also a symbolic woman. She is a symbol of what is in us: loneliness, broken sexuality, guilt, fear, incapacity to forgive and love. But Jesus offered her the gift of God the Water that will fully satisfy her deeper longing for pure joy and love. In Jesus she found the Fountain of Life that quenched her thirst, healed her wounds and brokenness and made her whole again. (NOTE: These readings are used for this Sunday for the Scrutiny of RCIA candidates. In other Masses without the Scrutiny, the Year B readings are used)
