Fourth Sunday of Advent
Greetings of Peace.
The Shrine church schedule is deviating from the norm over the next few weeks, so I thought that I would
walk through our calendar in the space below.
Saturday, December 18. The beginning of the Archdiocesan Mask Mandate. We ask you wear a mask in
all public areas of the Shrine. This mask requirement continues until January 17.
Thursday, December 23. The 12:05 Mass is moved from the second floor to the first floor on this day, to
allow the second floor church to be decorated. We could still use more volunteers to help with the
decorations. Please contact Fr. Jay Woods if you would like to be a volunteer decorator on this day. His
email is jwoods@stanthonyshrine.org
Friday, December 24. We open at 5:30am. Mass for Friday of the Fourth Week of Advent is at 6am, 7am
and 12:05pm. Confessions are on the first floor from 11am to 1pm. We have three Masses on Christmas
Eve. Masses will be at 4pm, 5:15pm and 6:30pm. The Arch Street Band will play at all three Christmas Eve
Masses. All Masses on this day are in English, and are in the second-floor church. The Shrine closes at
7:30pm.
Saturday, December 25. Merry Christmas! The Shrine opens at 9am. The Shrine has one Mass today, at
10am, in English, with the Arch Street Band. No confessions on this day. The Shrine closes at 11am.
Sunday, December 26. This is the Feast of the Holy Family. We will have the regular Mass schedule on
this day, with Masses at 7am, 8:30am, 10am, 11:30am, and 4pm, all on the second floor. Confessions from
3pm to 4pm in the first floor. In addition, on this day, we will have a 4pm Mass in Spanish in the first floor
church.
Friday, December 31. Masses at 6am, 7am, and 12:05pm celebrate the The Sixth Day in the Octave of
Christmas. The 5:15pm Mass on this day will celebrate the Vigil of the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother
of God.
Saturday, January 1, 2022. The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. The Shrine opens at 9am. There
will be one Mass at 10am. The Shrine closes for the day at 11am.
Sunday, January 2. The Epiphany of the Lord. We will have the regular Mass schedule on this day,
with Masses at 7am, 8:30am, 10am, 11:30am, and 4pm, all on the second floor. Confessions from 3pm
to 4pm in the first floor. In addition, on this day, we will have a 4pm Mass in Spanish in the first floor
church.
Monday, January 17. The Archdiocesan Mask Mandate is scheduled to end. This day has a shortened
schedule, due to the Martin Luther King holiday. Mass is at 12:05, and confessions are from 11am to 1pm.
We’re hiring! The Shrine is currently looking for a part-time Sacristan to serve on weekday afternoons.
If you are interested, please email hr@stanthonyshrine.org with the subject “Sacristan”. Thank you!
A Christmas Reflection
~ by Fr. Tom
During the Christmas season, the theme of vulnerability comes to mind in three ways.
Here at the Shrine, we regularly see vulnerable people at our Rita A. DiMento Women’s Medical Clinic and our
Franciscan Food Center. The poor struggle with things that we take for granted, such as keeping warm and clean and
staying hydrated and healthy. We are regularly reminded of the income disparity in our neighborhood and I am
profoundly grateful for all that you do to help us assist the poor.
The ongoing pandemic is the second vulnerability on our minds. This contagious disease has been a significant point
of reflection on our fundamental interconnectedness. The randomness of whom the disease affects is troubling to a
culture that craves organization and predictability.
The third type of vulnerability is the Nativity, in which vulnerable parents have a baby. Jesus comes into the world not
in some grandiose way, but in a cold, dark manger. God loves us so much that He is willing to share in our humanity.
We come to understand God when we become more fully aware of that humanity: in our thoughts and feelings,
strengths and vulnerabilities, hopes and dreams. Most of all, we come to understand God by imitating the love of
Jesus.
As we prepare to celebrate our Savior’s humble entrance into this world, please know that the friars at St. Anthony
Shrine pray that the Christ Child’s presence and infinite love continue to shine on you and yours.
Merry Christmas!
Are you hearing the call to be a Eucharistic Minister? Do you feel filled by the Spirit to proclaim the Word of God?
We have a particular need for both Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors at the early morning Masses.
Serving in the lay ministry here at the Shrine is an experience like no other. Doing so deepens your faith, expands your
understanding of the Mass, and can lead to friendships with incredible people. If you’re interested, send an email to:
