Greetings of peace.

As you may know, many nonprofit organizations are struggling to find workers. We are especially struggling to fine workers for our food center
which serves as a homelessness prevention program. We need both volunteers and employees for the shifts listed below. Candidates must be able
to lift 30-50 pound boxes. Willingness to learn how to use a pallet jack and forklift is a plus. We are open to both volunteers and new employees in
this area. Shifts available:

Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm.

The first Wednesday of every month from Noon to 3pm.
The first Thursday of every month from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

Please share these work opportunities with others. Please contact me at tconway@stanthonyshrine.org if you are interested. Thank you!

We have some interesting days coming up in October.

Sunday, October 2, at 2:30pm, at the Holy Cross Cathedral on Washington Street, Cardinal Sean O’Malley will confer the Cheverus Award
medals upon selected people in the Archdiocese as a recognition of their service to the Church and God’s people. Bishop Cheverus was the
founding Bishop of Boston and led the diocese from 1808 until his return to France in 1824. The public is invited to attend this annual ceremony.

We at the Shrine are particularly pleased this year because two of the awardees are long-time, popular members of the Franciscan community here
on Arch Street: Br. Sebastian Tobin, OFM, and Br. Daniel Murray, OFM.

Br. Sebastian Tobin, OFM, is the friar that you regularly see on Sunday in the lobby selling hand-made leather goods. He makes these items in a
large shop upstairs at the Shrine. Br. Sebastian had two uncles who, like the friars at Arch Street, were friars in Holy Name Province: Flavian and
Bernard.

Br. Dan Murray, OFM, is a fun-loving, hard-working and extroverted friar who is a big presence at the Shrine. I especially appreciate that Br. Dan
has always been quick to volunteer for a new project. For years now, he has been in charge of Mass Cards, the “Good Word for Today” program,
our online candle initiative, and he works in our Veterans Program.

On Monday, October 3, at 7pm, we Franciscans celebrate the Transitus, an annual commemoration the death of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis
died in the year 1226. As is our custom, the community’s Guardian, Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, presides at this liturgy which is a prayer service, not a
Mass. Fr. Damian Park, OFM, will preach.

On Tuesday, October 4, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We will have the normal Tuesday Mass schedule. At 4pm on that day, we celebrate
the blessing of the animals on Arch Street, outside in front of the church, at 4pm. We expect to have police horses from the Boston Police
Department participate in this ceremony, as well as many other animals.

On Sunday, October 9, we will have coffee after the 10am Mass. Coffee will be in the basement auditorium. We will be joined by officers from
Boston Police Department’s District A-1. We are grateful to have Captain Robert Ciccolo and his officers as important partners in the social
services work of the Shrine.

On Monday, October 10, the Shrine will be on a holiday schedule for Indigenous Peoples Day. Confessions 10am to 1pm and Mass at 12:05pm.

Tuesday, October 18, is the Feast of St. Luke. Fr. Damian Park, OFM, PhD, returns home to minister in Korea after more than 12 years in the
United States. Thank you for your good work at the Shrine, at BC, and elsewhere, Fr. Damian!

Tuesday, November 1, is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 6am, 7am and 12:05pm on that day.

Finally, our annual fundraising dinner is on Wednesday, November 16, at The Westin Boston Seaport Hotel. As always, we give thanks for
the generosity of our donors.

May God bless you on your October journey of faith!

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM

A beloved Arch Street tradition returns!
The Shrine was excited to host Tolton:
From Slave to Priest, a live performance
on the life of Father Augustus Tolton, the
first African-American priest, on Sept. 26
in the 2nd-floor church. The play included
a live actor on stage interacting with a full
cast of characters on a video screen was
both unique and visually engaging.

The Pope Francis Award: Pope Francis chose the name “Francis,” in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who was a man of poverty, a
man of peace, and one who loved and protected creation. The Pope Francis Award is presented to an individual whose lifework
mirrors the charism and mission of St. Francis of Assisi, lover of the poor and the alienated. It honors one who embodies the
Franciscan values of humility, compassion, respect and dignity of all people, and lives out the Gospel.

Dear Friends,

May the Lord give you peace!

It's been a while since I've caught you up on the happenings of the friars here at St. Anthony Shrine. Now that COVID has allowed us to return
to somewhat of a normal fraternal life a lot has been going on.

Over the summer we welcomed three young friars from South America to study English. Fr. Faustino dos Santos, OFM from Brazil studied
English at Boston University in order to prepare for a doctoral program in the United States. We hope to see Fr. Faustino back here in
September! Br. Dalton Machado, OFM is a young friar from our daughter province in Brazil. The Holy Name Province friars ministered in Brazil
for many years and helped the Brazilians form their own Holy Name Province. Br. Dalton spent most of the summer with us studying English at
Talk School of English and getting to know his American brothers. He moved to Philadelphia in August to continue this time in the USA. Finally,
Fr. Julian Beltran, OFM, a friar from Columbia studying in Barcelona, Spain was with us for the summer studying English for his doctoral
program. All three of them brought a great deal of joy and fraternity to us at Arch Street.

Another departure was that of Br. James LaGrutta, OFM. Br. James was with us for a year-long internship in fraternity and ministry. James
worked in many areas of Shrine ministry but mostly with Mary Ann Ponti in the food center. James made his Solemn (final) Profession as a friar
in August and moved on to St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia for a permanent assignment. James was a terrific member of our community and we
miss him--we also wish him all the best in his life as a friar minor!

Fr. Damian Park, OFM has been at St. Anthony Shrine for a number of years completing first a Masters Degree then a PhD in
medieval philosophy. Fr. Damian is a member of the Holy Korean Martyrs Province in South Korea. Fr. Damian will return to South Korea on
October 18. Along with studying and a busy schedule with different Korean Catholic groups, Fr. Damian did a great deal of ministry here at the
Shrine. We will miss his gentle, brilliant ways around the Shrine and in the friary. Remember Damian, wherever you go you will always have a
home in Boston!

Lest you think everyone is leaving, Br. Robert Frazzetta, OFM will be joining our community on November 1! Currently Br. Bob is in Australia
serving as a Visitor, the representative the Minister General to the Australian Province. When he gets here you will find Br. Bob all around the
Shrine. He is interested in working in spiritual direction and faith formation. He brings a wealth of experience as a teacher, a guardian, a
musician, a formation director and all around great guy to our ministry and fraternity.

Finally, two friars that you know well and see around often, Br. Sebastian Tobin, OFM and Br. Daniel Murray, OFM are being honored with the
Archdiocese of Boston Cheveres Award for their life long service to the Church and Franciscan Order.

It's been a season of transitions, for sure. But when the dust settles there are still 27 Franciscan Friars here to live the Gospel of our Lord Jesus
Christ in fraternity and from that fraternity to minister with you and for you. Thank you for your kindness to the friars, for your generosity to us
and our ministry and of course for your love and support.

May the Lord continue to bless you!

Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM
