I am glad to present our 8th edition of Tbilisi Marriott News
Magazine. Georgia, as you all know has overcome hard military
conflict period in August, 2008 and I am pleased to see that every-
thing is getting to its stage of stability and normal life. Despite this,
our hotel was in full operation and during this period hosted all the
VIP delegations and guests.
Let me brief you about what you can learn from this edition:
Apart from the information about our guests you will have a chance
to read some very interesting articles on history of the Tbilisi Opera
and Ballet State Academy Theatre building, get familiar with lead-
ing Georgian designers and their trends. As always Tbilisi Marriott
Hotel and Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi were in the center of the
events. We had a great honor of hosting the world-famous flamenco
dancer Joaquin Cortes, Bryan Adams - so called “Peace Soldier”
who held a charity concert for misplaced people of the conflict, as
well famous Russian film director Eldar Riazanov and many other
eye-catching news.

 The History of “Su Misura”
Fabric is the underlying factor, which will always give Ermenegildo
Zegna a distinct advantage over its competitors. For Ermenegildo
Zegna, the eponymous founder of the Zegna group, the driving force in
his quest to produce the finest men’s suiting fabrics in the world was
his zeal to procure the finest wool, cashmere and mohair from as far a
field as Australia, Mongolia and South Africa.
Back in the small village of Trivero, in the heart of the Italian Alps
(where the brand was born in 1910), he transformed the finest quality
natural fibres into threads. In the laboratory of the Zegna mill the first
fabrics were created, providing a platform on which the Made to Mea-
sure division would then grow.
By expertly blending wool & raw material fibre into thread, ex-
traordinary heights of textile perfection have been attained. To put into
context Zegna’s achievement of creating wool threads of 19 microns
(for a quality extra fine fabric) and 11.5 microns (for a superfine wool),
consider that a mere human hair measures 50 to 60 microns and the
most flexible of Scottish tweeds measure 35 microns. Zegna’s woollen
fabrics are comparable to the most beautiful silks, and even vicuna; the
‘cloth of the gods’ from the Andes.
At the pinnacle of the Ermenegildo Zegna fabric offering, is the
‘Vellus Aureum’ or Golden Fleece Trophy, which is a worldwide quest
for the world’s finest wool crop, of which a maximum of approximately
fifty pieces are offered selected boutique in the world to invited clients
once a year, spearheading the brand’s combination of luxury fabric
and master tailoring. ‘Vellus Aureum’ is a Made to Measure cloth and
Ermenegildo Zegna is the only global brand, to offer clients a fabric wo-
ven according to their tastes and desires. The ultimate finishing touch
is provided with the clients name woven into the fabric selvedge.
Working with these fine fabrics, it naturally followed that in the
1970’s the Made to Measure service was introduced, to provide a fully
customised tailoring experience. The distinct Zegna Made to Measure
style, is highly tailored with a natural silhouette, reminiscent of Neapoli-
tan tailoring and characterised by rich luxurious details and a powerful
Italian style.
The Made to Measure service differs from a Bespoke service,
which is usually offered by small niche tailors, traditionally such as
those in Saville Row. Unlike most bespoke services, which can take up
to six months, Zegna can deliver fully personalised garments within 4 /
6 weeks and with only 2 fittings.

For suits, jackets and coats you can choose from more than 450
different exclusive fabrics, patterns and colors produced by Lanificio
Ermenegildo Zegna. You have your choice of the classics, High Perfor-
mance, Traveller, 15Milmil15, 14Milmil, 13Milmil and Trofeo lines and
also brand new products of the season, such as Micronsphere, which
offers excellent, stain proof properties due to an exclusive finish that
nevertheless leaves the fabric soft and comfortable. After the material
has been selected, a style that flatters the customer’s figure and best
suits his needs must be chosen and is further customized through
unique details and special touches.
What makes Ermenegildo Zegna “Su Misura” garments so special
is the sartorial attention that each receives. Every garment is tested
during the sewing process, and each detail is chosen with care. All lin-
ings and accessories are made of natural fibers, cotton, horsehair, and
silk to ensure unparalleled softness. All finishing touches are done by
hand, stitch by stitch, down to the sewing of the inside label that bears
the customer’s name.
In just 4 weeks, a “Su Misura” suit is ready to be delivered in any

undergoes a final inspection and where any alterations are performed
(hemming of pants and sleeves, for example).
“Su Misura” accessories
For “Su Misura” shirts, which are ready in just three weeks, Erme-
negildo Zegna offers 200 fine fabrics such as Egyptian twill and double
twisted cottons and superb blends, including cool cotton and linen. All
buttons are made of Australian mother-of-pearl at least 4 mm thick, and
are applied in the finest sartorial shirt-making tradition.
For the “Su Misura” tie, there are four widths, four different lengths,
and 50 different types of fabric. The weight of the tie depends upon the
type of lining used, construction technique and whether it is lined or
not. The tab can also be embroidered with one’s monogram, on request.
In just a few weeks, the superbly tailored “Su Misura” tie, which is
entirely made by hand, is ready for delivery.
Shoes and belts are the supreme touch in the search for total
elegance. The customer can choose any of the three exclusive footwear
styles: Derby, Oxford and Moccasin. All are made using the high perfor-

constellations (Andrei Miagkov, Barbara Brilska, Yuri Yakovlev,
Lia Akhejakova) are identified by the heroes they play.

-You often appear in your movies as an unimportant char-

acter…
Eldar Ryazanov: Yes, the “director’s role” is a well-adopted
ruse in cinematography. I decided to start doing this after the film
“Girl without an Address” came out. It was then that I discovered
that the actors who play in this or that film are recognized while
the directors remain in the shadows.

-What do you think of the new version of “Irony of Luck”?

Eldar Riazanov: A while ago, the film’s producer Konstantin
Ernst asked me if I would do the remake of the film. I strictly re-
fused. As for the new version, its contents are absolutely unclear
to me.

-How has comedy become your genre?

Eldar Ryazanov: After graduating from the All-Soviet State
Institute of Cinematography I spent five years working in docu-
mentary film. My first film was a documentary called “Sakhalin

On that day (May 31) the conference hall of the Tbilisi Mar-
riott Hotel was full of reporters and TV cameras. They gath-
ered to catch another VIP guest at the Marriott, the megastar
of flamenco Joaquin Cortes. The famous choreographer and
dancer arrived in Tbilisi from Madrid via Munich and brought
with him a team of 13 professional instrumentalists. Cortes set
the flamenco fire in the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre and
left the Georgian capital on the same evening.

Before the press conference, the star tasted the 5-star service of
the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel and took a tour around Tbilisi. He also
had a rehearsal on the acoustic stage set up in the theatre according
to his demand and taste. And before the start of the concert, he ap-
peared in front of the Georgian mass media. The press conference
was opened by the direct host of Joaquin Cortes, the Executive
Director of Tagis Art company, Ms. Ani Laghidze:

“If my favorite artist gained the world recognition by his

hard work, our creative team managed to find a place for
Tbilisi in the busy schedule of Cortes. First I saw him on the
Hanover International Exhibition. Ever since I wanted him to
perform in Georgia so that the Georgian audience also expe-
rienced the emotions and pleasure his performance arouses in
the audience. I went to Cyprus and had talks with his manage-
ment… and as you can see, the result is evident – Joaquin will
dance for you on the Tbilisi opera stage tonight.”
After greetings Joaquin Cortes opened up with journalists and
overshadowed his established stardom image with his straightfor-
wardness.
Born in Cordova (Spain) in the family of dancers. Belongs to
Rayeses – the aristocratic dynasty of Gypsies. He started dancing
at the age of 12. At the age of 15 he already danced in the Spanish
National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de Espana). He became the solo-
ist of the same troupe when he was 18. In 1992 he opened his own
company the Joaquin Cortes Ballet of Flamenco. He has created
6 shows of his own choreography. One of them “Mi Soledad” he
presented in Tbilisi.
That night the Georgian public truly saw and felt something
unique, something not seen before: the simultaneous celebration
of music, rhythm and plastic. The audience shouted “OLE!” in
one voice.
The last question asked of the Spanish gypsy at the end of the
press conference was the following:
-Will you come to Tbilisi as a tourist some time? 37
Joaquin Cortes: I live like a gypsy. I have been performing on
different world stages for 20 years now. I think if I come here, it
will be again for a concert. If I ever come here as a tourist, some-
thing that will be very pleasant for me, believe me, the mass media
will not find out about it.
At the end of the press conference the star was presented with a
gift from “Tagis Art” – the work of the Georgian miniaturist Levan
Margiani.

“Mi Soledad” is my sixth show. This is the emotions that we

have when we are alone transmitted through choreographic
means and the language of plastic. We should learn to be alone,
to stay alone with ourselves, to delve into ourselves. With this
show I hope to make you feel what is gipsy people and how the
real gipsy soul and energy feel,” said the star.

-What can you say about your diplomatic mission in the

European Union? As we know, you are the ambassador of gyp-
sies in the European Union since 2007.
Joaquin Cortes: I am truly proud of being nominated by gyp-
sies as their representative to this organization. I have created the
foundation of gypsies in Spain. In 2000 I started the campaign
“Stop Antigypsism”. I am trying to improve the image of this
word. By the help of the European Union I want to care about the
education of gypsies. In short I have many plans.

-What role does the Duende phenomenon play in your work?

Joaquin Cortes: When I am standing on the stage and danc-
ing, I feel how I am swimming somewhere. I feel like I am in the
air. This is a real magic. I have no words to express the idea of
Duende. This is a truly unique phenomenon. You have to feel it.
Tonight I will give a true gypsy fiesta.

In 1851 the popular French newspaper “Illustration” wrote
about the Tbilisi Opera Theatre: “This city theatre with an
interior designed entirely in a Mauritanian style is undoubt-
edly one of the most elegant, stylish and picturesque buildings
that one can ever see…” This sentiment is not unusual as this
theatre, which just turned 157 years old, remains just as much
a symbol of Georgian culture today as it was in the 19th cen-
tury.
History
The very first opera stage in Tbilisi was originally opened in
the sports center. At the initiative of the then Chief Governor of
the Caucasus Mikheil Vorontsov, actors invited from Stavropol
performed here. For some time this stage was quite successful and
before the first permanent opera theatre was built, even the impe-
rial troupes visited and performed in the manege.
The first real opera theatre building was constructed on the
territory of the present Freedom Square, next to the Tbilisi Mar-
riott Hotel, in 1851. The building, which was distinguished for
its architecture, façade and interior, could hold 800 spectators. In
the spring of the same year, an Italian opera troupe was invited to
Tbilisi and one year after the opening of the theatre, the first bal-
let performance – a part from Tallion’s “Silfid” – was staged. The
Opera Theatre immediately raised the level of Tbilisi’s cultural life
and became so popular that the contemporary press wrote that the
Georgian population was obsessed with a kind of ‘operamania’.
Gali, Pati, Mazini, Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff, Shaliapin and oth-
ers held concerts in Tbilisi.
The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, which today carries the
name of the composer Zakaria Paliashvili, was twice victim of a
serious fire: in 1874 and in the 1970s. The theatre’s current build-
ing was built on Rustaveli Avenue in 1986 – that year the opera
season opened with a performance of Mikhail Glinka’s “Ivan Sus-
anin”. It was during this period that Georgian opera went through a
major development. Its first – and best-known – classical examples
are D. Arakishvili’s “Legend of Shota Rustaveli”, Z. Paliashvili’s
“Abesalom and Eteri” and V. Dolidze’s “Keto and Kote”.
The structure of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre has always
attracted the interest of the Georgian capital city’s guests. The
building, which was constructed in an eastern pseudo-Mauritanian
style with arrow-like arches and decorative towers, does not leave
viewers indifferent even today. The building’s internal ornamental
decoration, eastern motifs and the beautiful chandelier of the main
hall all continue to amaze. In the theatre’s foyer you can see two
wonderful halls – the red hall and the mirror hall where chamber
concerts and different presentations are often held.
The best Georgian performers, composers, conductors and
dancers work in the theatre. Currently the artistic director of the
theatre’s ballet troupe is Nino Ananiashvili, the former prima bal-
lerina of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre and one of the best dancers of
the world who has won all kinds of top international awards.
Museum
The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre has its own museum. Since
the day of its establishment unique exhibits have been kept here.
Unfortunately, the museum was damaged in a fire in the 1970s,
however the rebuilding of the collection still continues with the
help of the population. The programs, posters, invitations, pho-
tos, graphic and sculpture work, books, scale models of the opera
building and its stage as well as costumes are all kept in the re- 41
stored museum. Plans are afoot to reequip and repair the museum
according to modern standards.
Library
The theatre library holds a number of famous 19th and early

20 Century manuscripts while the ballet troupe of the Opera and
Ballet Theatre publishes the magazine “Arabesque”.
Tchaikovsky’s favorite troupe
The composer Peter Tchaikovsky, who was a frequent guest
of Georgia, was among those amazed by the theatre troupe. The
orchestra of that time participated in performances held in Peters-
burg, Italy, Vienna, Moscow and other cities – a tradition which
continues today.
Over the past three years Georgian audience have had the op-
portunity to see such famous conductors as Manlio Benz and Shu-
ia Okatsu; and soloists Ferucco Furlanetto, Makvala Kasrashvili,
Zurab Anjaparidze, Zurab Sotkilava, Badri Maisuradze, Michelle
Cryder and Eter Lamoris. The opera troupe actively cooperates
with Paata Burchuladze’s “Iavnana” charity foundation. As a re-
sult of this cooperation, several important projects have been im-
plemented, including a concert of the genius Ferucco Furlanetto.
With the foundation’s help, the Tbilisi Opera had received differ-
ent decorations from the Vienna and San Diego theatres.
Symphonic Orchestra
The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre Symphonic Orchestra
has been invited to perform in Turkey, Ukraine and Scandinavia
this year and unites performers of international caliber. At differ-
ent times this orchestra has been conducted by such luminaries as
Evgeni Mikeladze, Ivane Paliashvili, Odisey Dimitriadi, Shalva
Azmaiparashvili, Givi Azmaiparashvili, Jansugh Kakhidze.
 An interview with Director General David Sakvarelidze
-Mr. Sakvarelidze, this year the ballet troupe received the
‘Herald Angels Award’ at the Edinburg International Festival.
Can you tell us more about this?
Davit Sakvarelidze: For our ballet troupe this is a big honor.
We won the award for innovation and our high level performance
of Giselle and a single act program. It is fortunate that, at this fes-
tival which is attended by an extremely sophisticated and exacting
audience, we achieved such success. This is doubly remarkable
and valuable as this all happened while our country was at war.
-During the last season the theatre worked a lot and hosted
numerous concerts, festivals, presentations, evenings…
Davit Sakvarelidze: The most noteworthy was Verdi’s three-
act opera “Attila”. This very successful (and expensive) project
united some of world’s biggest stars including Paata Burchuladze

and Michelle Cryder. The visit of our opera troupe to Israel was
also very successful. As a result of this visit, we received many
invitations. Also worth noting was our tour of New York where
we went together with the ballet troupe. With the help of Paata
Burchuladze, the Yuri Temirkanov’s Philharmonic Orchestra of
Saint Petersburg visited the theatre. All this points to the fact that
Georgia is prepared to host the world’s top stars.
-What can you say about the building of an “Opera City”
in Tbilisi?
Davit Sakvarelidze: It has been quite some time that, under
order of the president, the theatre has received special attention. In
the nearest future, after the repair work is over, a so-called “Opera
City” will really be built in Tbilisi.
-What are the theatre’s nearest future plans?
Davit Sakvarelidze: The renovation of the opera is to start in
2009 and during this repair period the troupe will continue to per-
form on different theatre stages. We will focus on tours. Unfortu-
nately, several large projects had to be cancelled because of the
war, but we continue negotiations with Placido Domingo and other
stars. Simultaneously the spectators will have an opportunity to
see performances from the Georgian repertoire. On January 4 we
promise a real surprise for the Georgian public: for the first time
on our stage Verdi’s opera “Nabuko” will be staged with Paata
Burchuladze, Zurab Sotkilava and other famous singers perform-
ing arias.

Parnas Café, Restaurant & Lounge, which along with a diverse menu,

Sunday Brunches will last from 12:00 till 16:00 and will be more diverse
with changing themes and live jazz to keep the atmosphere smooth (59
GEL plus VAT). Behind the magic of all these delicious innovations is Se-
bastien Klinholff, Chef de Cuisine, French by nationality, who resides in
Tbilisi, and takeing care of Parnas kitchen for over a year now. Sebastien
keeps the Parnas menu updated with fresh and diverse dishes and does his
best to keep the atmosphere in the restaurant pleasing and casual.

us about them.
The two biggest innovations are the weekday Business Lunch and Sunday
Brunch. A buffet type service will be provided for our customers on weekdays
with a vast choice of meals. As for Sundays, French and Eastern cuisine will
be trading off weekly, cooked by different chefs. So that it doesn’t get monoto-
nous and boring.

What is essential for making a restaurant menu successful?

Know your market and know your ingredients! Fresh food is the first and
most essential thing to take into account. The secret of delicious food lies in
delicious ingredients, and Georgia is rich in this way. We mostly use local
products, at least as much as we can. For example, we do import fish as the
types we cook with are not available here, but we try to import as little as pos-
sible in order to keep it maximally fresh. Another secret is to keep it simple,
but classy.

What about the specials of the house?

Besides the dishes listed on the menu, Parnas Café, Restaurant & Lounge
also proposes daily specials. They are chef-driven specials, which I come up
with and stand behind. So it is my responsibility to keep them exciting and
delicious.

How popular is French cuisine in Georgia?

According to the number of French restaurants in the city, I can tell that it
is getting quite popular.

What does your French restaurant offer that others don’t?

Every restaurant is unique as it has its own chef, its own staff, its own menu
and variety of ideas. But what the real difference that our restaurant proposes
is the lack of useless formalities. The popular idea that a visit to a restaurant at
the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel requires a lot of money and dressing up is far from
being true. People can come in and enjoy our friendly atmosphere dressed
casually just for a drink, or for just a dessert.
 What is your professional opinion about Georgian cuisine?
Georgian cuisine is splendid. It may not be as diverse as French, but this is
only natural, since Georgians didn’t have access to imported ingredients for a
long time. But they still managed to work out an amazing cuisine with what
they had. The only thing I would change is the presentation of food, because in
this business, looks do matter. But I definitely see some restaurants improving
this aspect as well.

What do you think of Georgian restaurants?

I think Georgian restaurants are fine as they are. They don’t require service
as delicate as European ones do. So when it comes to traditional Georgian res-
taurants, everything is in its right place. On the other hand, if anyone decides
to open a very modern Georgian restaurant, they will have to work hard on
changing rules of service.

What advice would you give to new chefs?
All I would say is hang in there. It is a pretty difficult and job with a lot of
responsibilities. There’s fire around, sharp blades, lots of people in the kitchen
and always so little time. So it can get very stressful. But once time passes and
you start getting used to it, it all gets incredibly fun.

Avtandil works on a 2009 Spring-Summer collection that will be dictated by
a combination of world trends and already the well-known signature of the
designer. The creative reach of Avtandil now extends beyond Tbilisi and cov-
ers the European market. The designer is currently preparing for Kiev Fashion
Week where his new collection will close the show on October 21.

“The trends that I emphasize this time show a free silhouette with a
slightly highlighted waist. The major tones are white, grey and black. The
same collection will also feature fabrics manufactured by laser that create
the impression of being connected with space. In general, the most popular
tone this year is grey plus a free silhouette. It seems that the world has been
enjoying a free style.”

roots. This season, the designer adds a fashion show on her own account which
she will hold in a fashionable place, with an environment that will include many
celebrities.

By the way, the designer does not mind holding such defiles in “hot zones”
and her militaristic appeal is closely watched by her customers.

The women of Teona Tavartkiladze are always attractive and aesthetic; like
going to parties and is often seen in the places where her clothes will be noticed
and evaluated.

This year the designer puts an emphasis on a free and diverse style: “I plan
to go to Milan to find new fabrics. I put the biggest emphasis on tweed in
its different variations, which are very fashionable this year. In the nearest
future I do not plan to hold a show in Tbilisi, however, this does not mean
that I will not work on a new collection… One thing I know for sure is that
we will have a very creative winter, which will be reflected in the new col-
lection.”

The participants of the motorcycle rally London-Tbilisi who success-

fully managed to enjoy biking adrenaline and to organize the event in
the charity format, were awaited by hundreds of fans at the finish line in
Tbilisi… And after some minutes of anticipation, several bikers roared
into the yard of JSC “Bagrationi 1882”. The wave of fireworks and cham-
pagne covered the participants of the rally altogether. The bikers replied
by showing some biking tricks which made impression on everyone. The
rally where some famous businessmen took part is becoming a tradition
and draws increasing interest from the public.

The rally London-Tbilisi was first held in summer 2007. Then the initiative
of Levan Vasadze, Chair of the Board of Directors of JSC “Bagrationi 1882”
and Patrick James Gilford, the English lord, were heard by just two friends,
however, this year the number of participants increased to seven.

On July 25, at 10:30 the Georgian businessman Levan Vasadze, the famous
Russian photographer and writer Iuri Rost, the Russian businessmen Roman
Khomenko, Aleksey Kuzminikh and Konstantin Gramotnev, the Iraqi Paris
Al Obaid and the journalist Iuri Sirota set out from the terrace of the George
Club in London. Patrick James Gilford met the participants of the rally at the
finish line. “We were nervous and worried because we knew how difficult
this route was,” he said.

During the ten days, the participants of the rally crossed the borders of
12 countries. Iuri Rost won the challenge prize: “I am happy that I made it
to Tbilisi. I was not even sure I would make that. Now I feel great as my
friends Gogi Kharabadze and Kakhi Kavsadze met me here…”

Iuri Rost gave his worn shoes to the rally museum that according to him
had the dust from five continents on it.

The ceremony of awards in Tbilisi was held in a cheerful mood. The

guests that included some celebrities received the sparkling wine from
“Bagrationi 1882”.
