I. Read the following passage and answer the


questions:-
Coal is chiefly used as a fuel for cooking. It is used
in factories, to run the great mills and in the
railway engines and ships. Without coal ,
civilization would not have advanced so much. The
by-products of coal cake, coal-gas and coal tar
are equally useful. Various kinds dyes , sweet
scents and medicines are made from coal.; coal tar
is used to preserve wood and iron from being
destroyed.
Coal is found in India, Great Britain, U.S.A. and in
many European Countries. In Assam, there are coal
mines in Margherita and Joypore. Coal in Assam
was discovered by a British Company named Assam
Railway Trading Company with its main offices in
London. Coal is found in Meghalaya and Nagaland.
Today through electricity and Diesel are fast
replacing the coal, it should always be remembered
that coal did play a very important role in the
progress of civilization.
