PROCEDURE:
1, Assemble the model arm as shown in the diagram, and attach it to the retort stand, with the
‘upper arm’ section held vertical,
2. Hang a 1 newton weight on the hook at the end of the forearm on the model.
3, Attach a spring balance to hook 1. Pull upwards with the spring balance, parallel to the ‘upper
arm’, until the ‘forearm’ is exactly horizontal. Take the reading on the spring balance, and fill it
in on the results table.
4, Repeat with the balance pulling on hooks 2, 3 and 4.
5. Replace the 1 newton weight with a 0.5 newton weight, and repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. Tabulate your results, and draw two graphs (one for each weight used) to show the relationship
between the force needed to lift each weight, and the position of the spring balance. (Draw
both graphs on the same pair of axes.)
