What are the epacks, online packs and study packs?

Epacks, online packs and study packs are the self-study element of your course. It is essential
that you complete them regularly in order to keep up with your course.

Epacks and online packs are accessible from anywhere. We recommend that you have a
broadband connection if you are working from home. They are divided into two sections (exercises
and extension work) and prepare you for the examination. They complement what you have done
in class but can also introduce new points. You should spend approximately 1H30 to 2 hours on
the exercise section and 2 or 3 hours on the extension section.

For some modules, we have study packs. They are paper-based and you will need to visit the
Language Centre (on the first floor of the Learning Centre on Holloway Road or on the third floor
in Moorgate) in order to access audio tapes and course books.

Your lecturer will tell you at the first session whether you need to do epacks, online
packs and study packs, and will give you usernames and passwords.

Epack exercises There are 9 or 10 interactive activities per week such as listening, reading and
grammar exercises. They are fun and user-friendly.

Exercises for online packs You will have to print your online pack in order to do the
exercises. There are 8 or 9 exercises (such as listening, reading or grammar).

Epacks and online packs extension work section

This section is very important and contains 3 main types of exercises: Web links, reference
materials in the Language Centre (course books and grammar books, CD Roms, videos etc.) and a
written task.
Where do I start?
You can do the exercises in the order of your choice. If you do not feel confident or if you have
missed a lesson we recommend that you do the extension work section first. This will give you the
opportunity to revise the content of the lesson.

What feedback do I get?
Online feedback For epacks, the interactive exercises give you feedback on your performance as you
go along. You will get help buttons and grammatical explanations. You will be able to see the text of
the listening exercises (in one way or another).
For online packs, answers are at the end of the file.
Paper feedback For epacks and online packs, the extension work section refers to self-study materials
in the language Centre. Most of the answers to exercises are included in the books or on the CD
Roms. For study packs (paper-based), you will find answers at the end of each pack and in the
books.
Teacher’s feedback Every week your teacher will spend some time answering questions about the
study packs (all formats), collecting your written task, handing back corrected work and integrating
them into the lesson.

How do I work with these packs?

You can do the epacks, online packs and study packs (paper-based) in small chunks and as many
times as you wish. You can have a notebook divided in sections (grammar, vocabulary etc.) and
take notes as you go along. You can give yourself focussed goals (concentrating on listening
exercises only etc). You can work with a partner and design your own exercises (great to check
that you have understood a point) for example: write down sentences and mix the words up, take
all the verbs from a text etc.
