Follow up questions about the Silk:

1.) What does the protagonist feel? Why does he feel this way? What specific parts in the
text tell you this?
The protagonist fell in love to the girl who is wearing a loose red robe. In the part “
He kept his eye fixed on those Hara Kei and only for an instant, almost without
realizing it, lowered them to the face of the woman.” And this time the Protagonist
can’t stop glancing on the woman.

2.) What does the girl feel? Why do you think so? Why did she do what she did?
In the story I think the girl is attracted to Herve, because she keeps on glancing at
him.

3.) How did you feel when you were reading the text? Do you think what they were
experiencing was love or lust? How can you tell?
When I am reading the text, I am confused of the story or in the action of Herve and
the girl. I think that they are just experiencing attraction towards each other, it can
show it in the story where they show indirect kiss by sipping in the cup of tea.

4.) There seems to be a whole different conversation going on between Herve and the
girl, and yet not a word is spoken. How are they able to communicate with each
other?
The girl and Herve communicate with each other without speaking, they used
gestures such as eye contact, movements and sipping in the teacup.
5.) Why doesn’t Hara Kei know what is going on?
In that time Hara Kei and Herve are having a business and for Hara Kei it is an
important matter, that’s why he focuses more in the business than noticing what’s
going on between the two.
6.) What are the complications involved, and what obstacles can you predict in
relationship?
The complication or the hindrance that I can predict when the girl and Herve is
having a relationship in the future is that the girl is owned by Hara Kei and Herve has
a wife.

7.) What does the cup symbolize?


In the story the cup symbolizes a new desire or a new love story to start.

8.) What is the significance of the glances between Herve and the girl?
The significance of the glances between Herve and the girl is that it gives them a hint
that they are attracted to each other.
9.) Do you find the text romantic? Why or why not?
For me, I don’t find the text romantic because it doesn’t show true or authentic love.
It is only attraction and for me it is not love.

10.) What does this reveal about the possible attractions of being with someone from a
different place?
In the story it shows two different country and culture. I can that our world is huge,
we can meet people in different parts of the world and maybe one of them will have a
significance in our life or they can contribute greatly experience and lessons in our
life.
