Context: I retook behavior management as my last specialized elective

during spring term 2017. Although I was dreading retaking this class I now
think its extremely crucial to go over to some of the behavior intervention
strategies that I may have to use with students. This time taking the class I
am finding the behavioral intervention strategies are beginning to make
more sense to me than the first time I took it. As I completed my practicums
I was able to connect the intervention strategies I saw educators implement
with appropriate behavioral terms.
Connection: One of the things that I have learned about in behavior
management as well as other classes throughout my degree is contingency
contracts. I think that these can be extremely effective, because it provides a
student with clear expectations as well as a clear reward system if they
demonstrate these behaviors. I think if done effectively it can be a bridge of
communication between students and teachers, parents and teachers, or
between other educators.
Contemplation: In behavior management I learned that when developing
contingency contracts, it is best to only choose a few target behaviors. It is
also extremely important to have it clearly formatted, I think I was successful
there. Some of the things I could work on is making the positive
reinforcements clearer and making the language more concise. Behavior
interventions should always be able to be adapted so I am open minded
about the fact that this contingency contract may not work for some
students. I am dedicated to evaluating the success of an intervention and
making appropriate adjustments or corrections.
