Sharing food is important to most Native American societies because of the value that

is placed on food. Food is valued as sacred because historically many of the Native
American nations experienced frequent food shortages. They consider food as a "gift of
the natural realm".

This impacts interactions with Native Americans during meals or hospitality and one
must take care to follow proper etiquette. In many cultures, and American families,
refusing food is not seen as rude or a sign of disrespect. However many Native
American tribes may consider it rude for a guest to refuse food. Similarly, it is also seen
as impolite to eat in front of others without sharing.
