WEEK THREE REPLIES 2

Week Three Discussion Replies

Susan Brown:
I think that focusing on noise for your topic this week was very important, as noise is

often overlooked as a potential barrier to effective communication. Prior to the readings this

week, I was unaware of the three classifications of noise, physical noise, psychological noise,

and physiological noise. Physical noise is one of the most common types of noises and barriers

to communication. Psychological noise comes from personal experiences or expectations of

others. Physiological noise can relate to a condition that a person has internally that can impede

effective communication. I never really thought about noise being broken into three different

categories, but it now makes more sense after learning about communication and barriers to

effective communication. While I did not select partnership building, I think that it is an

important term not only in education, but in communicating in other environments and careers. I

also believe that partnership building is an essential element for effective communication and

collaboration to take place; as all involved in partnership building establish a relationship in

order to communicate and clarify any issues or concerns.

I agree that partnership building does not just involve individuals and communications, it

can also include organizations, businesses, companies, and other community organizations

working towards a similar goal or outlook. While I do not have extensive experience with

partnership building, I am looking forward to working with new individuals and organizations as

I move into my new job next school year; as this will help me to gain experience with

partnership building. The terms that you chose this week are great, as they comprise many

factors within successful communication and collaboration. I think that it is important that

everyone take these terms into consideration when working to build or establish communication

or collaboration with others.

Chyntia,
WEEK THREE REPLIES 3

Your selection of culture is important, as culture is one barrier that continues to impede

effective communication and collaboration for many people in todays society. While the United

States and other nations have become more culturally diverse in the digital age of social media

and other great technologies; many people are still finding difficulty in cultural considerations

when communicating or collaborating with others from different cultures. I agree that learning

about other cultures and traditions is beneficial to communication, as allows each person to

better understand how to communicate and interact with people from a different culture. This in

turn leads to fewer understandings and better communication between people of different

cultures. I also believe that feedback is another essential element of the communication process,

whether the feedback is positive or negative it is still a valuable resource. The feedback should

be used to make adjustments and improvements to the communication process, as this is an

opportunity for many people to see which areas of the communication process that they need

support or additional training in.

While some people are hesitant to provide feedback after communicating with them, I

encourage every person that I communicate or collaborate with to provide me feedback, as I am

wanting to improve and see which areas I need the most improvement and support in. Even

though not every person wants or accepts feedback, it could provide each person with the

essential tools to become a better communicator overall. The vocabulary term that you chose

that stuck out the most to me was generating potential solutions. Every teacher understands that

you must have a potential solution readily available when communicating with parents or other

educators. While this can be challenging, being open to provide options and solutions is part of

team work and ensures that all members of the team have viable options open for discussion.

Even if your solution is not chosen, I think that it is important to be a contributor and team player

when it comes to communication and collaboration.

WEEK THREE REPLIES 4

Shelley,
The selection of proactive problem solving for one of your definitions is a great choice,

as I often find myself as an educator proactive problem solving in many situations. While not

every person takes the belief of proactive problem solving, using this stance will help to foresee

potential problems or issues and address the problems or issues before they get out of control.

Proactive problem solving allows each individual to determine if concerns or issues could

escalate, and it also allows each person to implement a plan of action; thus quickly resolving the

issue or situation. Even though proactive problem solving might not work for every issue or

concern, it is effective in having a plan of action in place and allows each person that uses it to be

better prepared to address a situation or issue in a timely fashion. I also agree with inclusion

being an important factor, as I believe that each student should spend the maximum amount of

their school day with identified and non-identified peers. I am also in support of the least

restrictive environment, which goes along with inclusion services.

Perhaps one of the most important cases that I addressed this school year had to do with

inclusion and the amount of time that the student was going to spend in the general education

classroom. While this was a struggle, I was able to advocate for the student to be placed in a less

restrictive environment; and the student flourished and did well in the least restrictive

environment. One important key fact to remember is that the inclusion or least restrictive

environment will vary from student to student, and it is important to monitor and observe each

student to determine if the placement is the least restrictive. I believe that your selection of

consultation was a great decision as well, because it is something that is vital to communication

and education as well. Even though not all teachers provide consultation services to their

students, it is a skill that all educators must have in order to be the best support for students,

other staff members, and community members. While I am beginning to develop consultation

skills, I believe that this school year has allowed me to practice and develop the necessary skills

in order to successfully consult with students, staff members, and community members; and is

one area of communication that I would like to continue growing in.
