1.0 INTRODUCTION
The fundamental issues which management in the oil and gas exploration and
production industry have to address in order to make decisions about the
investment opportunities presented to them are as follows:
Hydrocarbon potential
Risk
Economics.
Firstly, management must be satisfied that the basin, geological trend, play,
prospect, development project or production Project being proposed has
hydrocarbon potential and that the potential is of sufficient size to meet the
companys corporate goals.
The assessment of hydrocarbon potential is base don geological concepts
which are developed via geological, geophysical, geochemical, and other
techniques.
The assessment of the potential size of reserves in the play, prospect,
development Project or production Project can be achieved by a variety of
geological, ergineering, statistical, and other methods.
Secondly, an assessment must be made of the risk associated with the play,
prospect, development Project or production Project.
In assessing risk, it is necessary to assess such factors as:
The probability of hydrocarbon accumulations being present in a basin
The probability of a postulated accumulations actually existing where it has
been interpreted to occur
The probability that the accumulations of the size predicted
The assessmentof these factors provides an assessment of technical risk
However, in making decisions about in which opportunities to invest the
companys capital, management also has to take into consideration various
other kinds of risk
Other kinds of risk which may influence the management decisin-making
process include:
Bussines risk
Commodity Price risk
Ervironmental risk
Political risk
Etc.
Thirdly, the potential economics worth and value to the company of the play,
prospect development Project or production Project which is being considered
must be determined.
The economic analysis must determine how profitable the postulated
accumulations will be and wheter or not the economics meet, and ideally
exceed, company requirements.
The key elements in exploration and production decisin making may de
represented by the simple formula:
HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL+RISK+ECONOMICS=DECISION
2.1 INTRODUCTION
RESERVOIR: A rock unit capable of storing the hydrocarbons and allowing them to be
produced at economic rates.
Rational and realistic predictions of petroleum reservoir rocks, source rocks, seals, and
traps (I.E. the vital components of an exploration play) are obtained via basin analysis.

NTRODUCCIN
2.1 INTRODUCCIN
DEPSITO
