Job Description:
- Design and process equipment for large scale operations
- Plan and test manufacturing products + treating byproducts, as well as
supervising production
Can specialize in different fields and processes including: making nanomaterials,
biological engineering and developing products. Also work in producing electricity, food,
electronics, clothes and paper. Must be aware of all aspects in manufacturing
chemicals, drugs and other products, as well as how the process of manufacturing
affects the environment and safety of workers and consumers. Would be preferable if
they were: analytical, creative, ingenuine, math-oriented, friendly, and have problem
solving skills.
Working Conditions:
40 hours per week on average. No real physical requirements - just preferably in shape.
Hazards include: toxic materials, corrosive materials, irritants, radioactive materials,
cancer causing materials, explosives, flammables - all preventable with no prolonged
exposure
Career Path:
After graduating, a typical first job would be process development. With experience,
chemical engineers may progress from production management positions for small units
to eventually large industrial complexes. Outlook includes: location, time of year (for
seasonal jobs), trends that affect overall employment, employment turnover,
occupational growth, and size of occupation. Undergraduate degrees - biochemical
engineering, medicine, petrochemical engineering, biomedical engineering, research
and development. Masters degree - pharmaceuticals, textile manufacturing, paper and
pulp industry, and environmental regulation. Level of education and degree affects
which type of job because of how much more advanced the courses are along with
prerequisites on how to get into that course.
