Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Learning is considered mans most important endowment

for it is the foundation of every human act and

development. It is a continuous process and takes place

anywhere. Absenteeism means chronic absence (Merriam

Websters dictionary). Students who skip school a lot, miss

out of the opportunity to gain a quality education and have

more difficult forming relationship and participating in

school activities. Students with excessive absences may

feel disconnected from academics and believe that the

lesson are not relevant to their lives.(William, Linda L.

1978)

Chronic absenteeism can often result in the students

getting expelled, especially if the students has

behavioural issue and extremely low grades. Student who are

disconnected from school are less likely to be aware of the

attendance policy. This increase the chances of them being

expelled from school.

Excessive absences create gaps in the students

education,. Moreover, due to the frequent the student they

have higher chances of being left behind of the lesson.

Also frequent absences students may forget the previous

lesson which result academic and security. Student may

doubt to their ability to excel academically and stop

putting in the effort to achieve high grades.

Theoretical framework

This study was anchored in the social disorganization

theory, disorganize areas cannot exert social control over

acting out youth: this areas can be identified by the

relatively high levelof change, fear, instability,

incivility , poverty and deterioration and these factors

have the direct inference on the areas delinquency rate.

Moreover these theory will probably affect the life style

and attitude of those persons living therein and especially

for students who are more vulnerable. Due to poverty,

unhealthy lifestyle would occur, in adequate parental

supervise depression, boredom and feeling of

disconnectedness will arise in every youth. (Clifford Shaw

and Henry McKay)
