beganourchambergroupstwodaysaweekaspartofourconcertbandexperienceforour
studentsingrades712.Partofthisgivesanopportunityforupperclassmentohelpconductthese
smallerensemblesandhelpmentorthemiddleschoolstudents.OverthecourseofSeptember
andOctoberIhavebeengivingdifferentseniorsinthebrassensembleanopportunitytohelprun
therehearsalstoseewhowouldfitbestintheroleassectionleader...andthenJacobgaveita
goacoupleofweeksago.

WhatIamwitnessinghasbeenremarkableandIreallyhadtotakeapausetodayduringclass.I
satinthebackandwatchedashetaughtrhythmandnotestothestudentsastheyplayed"The
SaintsGoMarchingIn."Hewaspolite,helpful,andmusicallycorrectallthingsIalreadyknew
abouthimandwasnotsurprised.However,whatwasnewformewaswitnessinghispacing,
abilitytotroubleshootwhensomethingwaswrong,andsuccessfullymanagethecomplexbehavior
stylesofhisclassmates.Wehaveonestudentwhotakesalittlecoaxingtostayontaskandhas
troublebeingstill.Hekeptwalkingaroundandyoucouldtellitwasdistracting.Jacobjustasked
himstraightouttotakeaseatandthestudentsaid"ok"andsatrightdown...Imean,IwishIcould
havevideotapedthis.Itisclearhehasahighlevelofrespectamonghispeersthatmostteachers
strivefor.

AsaresultofwhatIwaswitnessing,Iwasabletojointherockbandinthemusicofficefora
longerperiodoftimethenusual.TherewasasenseofreliefasIwasabletowatchthebrass
ensemblethroughmyofficewindowlookingintothetheatreroomandIsawthateveryonewason
tasktheentiretime.TheendresultwasthatIcouldputagreateramountofattentionintotherock
bandwhichtheyappreciated.Bytheendoftheperiodtherockbandhadfinishedtheirfirstsong
frombeginningtoendwhichwasafeatthathadnotbeenaccomplishedsofarthisyear.This
successwouldnothavehappenedhadInotbeenabletotrustJacobleadingthebrassensemble.

ThoughIamsureheisinterestedinsomeotheravenue,Jacobwouldmakeafantasticmusic
educator.Evenifitisnotafieldheisinterestedin,IknowthatthetraitsIsawtodaywillcarryover
intohisfuturesuccesses.We'reluckytohavehiminbandandevenluckierthatheisonlyajunior!
