Ideas for Paragraph Assignments

The list below has some ideas for paragraph topics. By no means is this list exhaustive
feel free to add/modify/delete topics as you see fit at your center. Selecting topics for
beginner writing assignments can be a challenge when it comes to students having enough
background knowledge/vocabulary. Repurposing passages/activities that were covered in
class can help students review and review familiar vocabulary and grammar structures.

Austen
1) *Note: Provide a list of adjectives for students to choose from instead of using the
terminology.* Complete this sentence. I am a(n) adjective person. Then write
about how and why you are that kind of person.
2) Write a self-introduction. Use the prompts on Page 3.
3) Interview your classmate using the questions on Page 13. Write a paragraph about
him/her.
4) Write about ELS/our classroom. Use Page 19 to help you.
5) Write about your family. Use Page 28 to help you. Make sure you use adjectives in
your paragraph. Use page 30 to help you.
6) Write about a famous person in your country. Use Page 29 to help you.
7) Write about your routine. Talk about what you do in the morning/afternoon/night
or weekday/weekend or summer/winter.
8) Write about your house in the US/your house in your country. Use Pages 64-65 to
help you.
9) Write about your hometown. Use Page 71 to help you.
10) Write about your best friend. Describe him/her and write about what you do
together.
Bronte Health, Important Day, Instructions/Process
1) Write about how to stay healthy in the summer/winter, in the US/in your country.
2) Write about two people you know one who is healthy and one who is not. Talk
about their routines, diets, and habits.
3) Write about the day you came to the US/the day before you came to the
US/graduated from high school or university/got married/had your son or
daughter. Use Page 48 to help you.
4) Write about your idea of a perfect day. Use Page 48 to help you.
5) Write about the best party/vacation/wedding/holiday celebration you ever
experienced. Talk about who was there, what you wore, what you did, what you ate,
etc. Use Page 48 to help you.
6) *Teacher prep: Bring a selection of pictures to class or ask students to bring some
and exchange them.* Look at this picture and imagine it is your life. Write about the
day you had.
7) Write about how to change your mood from sad/happy, stressed/relaxed,
calm/angry, angry/calm, tired/awake. Use Pages 76-77 to help you.
8) Write about how to be a good husband/wife/son/daughter/friend/students/
father/mother.
9) Write about how to get ready for school/a fancy party/a job interview. Talk about
clothes, hair, makeup, etc.
 10) Write about how to prepare for cleaning your house/a party/having a guest
over/having a barbeque/having a picnic/having a dinner party/preparing for a test.
Talk about how to set up the location, what supplies to get, and what to do.
Conrad Teachers choice, Time Order, Opinion

1) Write about what visitors to our ELS city/your home city can do during the day
and at night.

3) Write about how you get ready in the morning/get ready for bed. Talk about each
