1 General remarks / Terms and Definitions
OMICRON specifies a typical and a guaranteed accuracy of its secondary test sets:

Typical accuracy: 95 % (2-Sigma deviation) of all devices of a production lot show the specified accuracy
immediately after a factory calibration.

Guaranteed accuracy: 100 % of all devices of a production lot remain within the specified accuracy for one
year after factory calibration (within 23C 5C in the frequency range from 10 to 100 Hz and after a warm-up
phase of more than 25 minutes).

Verification: conformation by examination and provision of objective evidence that specified requirements
have been fulfilled. (ISO 9000:2005). Verifications can be carried out by any user provided that required
reference devices and accessories are available. Verifications furthermore can be carried out at OMICRON
Service Centers and authorized Service Centers run by OMICRON distributors.

Calibration: a set of operations that establish, under specified conditions, the relationship between values of
quantities indicated by a measuring instrument, and the corresponding values realized by the standard
(reference device) Please note: a calibration does not include a re-adjustment

Re-adjustment: the act of adjusting something to match a standard. Calibrations including a re-adjustment are
exclusively carried out at the OMICRON Development Center in Klaus/Austria.

3 Drift
Drift is the change of accuracy over time. The degree of drift depends on environmental conditions like
temperature, humidity, mechanical stress, frequency and hours of use.

Statistical evaluation of test sets show a drift of less than 200 ppm (0,02 %) per year in the vast majority of all
investigated devices. However, in rare cases drift effects could be verified up to 400 ppm per year.

4 Recommended verification, calibration and re-adjustment intervals
The precision requirements of a test set strongly depend on the applications it is used for. Protective relays
often measure the measurement quantities (V, I) in a quite inaccurate manner. Typical errors in magnitude
and phase angle are > 1 %. Relay testing thus can still be performed with a test set that does not meet its
initial accuracy specs. anymore. A magnitude error of 0.2 % for instance is still adequate in many applications.
In other cases where the test set is used for calibration of meters (class 0.2), transducers, PQ meters or
PMUs (Phasor Measurement Unit) the enhanced accuracy of a CMC 156 EP, CMC 256-6 EP or CMC 256plus
may be required and full attention has to be paid to regular accuracy checks (verifications) and re-calibrations
(including re-adjustments).

For relay testing applications it may be possible to extended calibration intervals to two or even three years. In
this case we recommend verifying the accuracy of the test equipment with on-site checks performed every 6
or 12 months to ensure that the equipment is still within the required tolerances. In addition we recommend a
factory re-calibration that always includes a re-adjustment at OMICRON Austria in regular intervals (i.e. every
three years).

For device calibrations of meters, transducers, PQ meters, PMUs or any other accurate measurement device
a re-calibration interval of one year is highly recommended. If national regulations call for shorter calibration
intervals additional on-site accuracy checks (verification) may be performed by the owner of the equipment
every 3 or 6 month.

On-site accuracy checks (verifications) and calibrations are supported by FCS. (Field Calibration Software)
FCS is integrated in the Test Universe software, for more details please consult the Test Universe software
help. Please note: FSC does not support CMC 310 and does not facilitate re-adjustments!

In case of increased verification or calibration intervals the user is responsible to ensure appropriate accuracy
of the test equipment by cross-referencing the accuracy with traceable reference equipment with appropriate
accuracy on a regular basis or prior to use. Typically the accuracy of the reference equipment should be 5
times better than the device to be verified or calibrated.

5 Service Centers
CMC users may carry out accuracy checks (verifications) by themselves. It must be pointed out that accurate
measurement equipment is required which is not available in many cases. More information on the required
equipment can be found in the TU software / FCS online help. As an alternative CMC test sets (and
amplifiers) can be sent to the nearest OMICRON Service Center or local Service Center run by an OMICRON
distributor. These Service Centers are fully equipped with the entire required reference measurement devices.

However, it must be re-emphasized that Calibrations including a Re-adjustment and calibrations of CMC 310
can exclusively be carried out at the OMICRON Development Center in Klaus/Austria.
