Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics Whats new in 2013.1

The 2013.1 Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics release comprises:

The latest VISAGE finite element geomechanics simulator (with full functionality for faults, fractures,
multi-million cell models, and MPI parallel).
An improved Petrel module providing the user-interface for all simulation pre-processing (grid
embedment, property modeling and population, boundary conditions, one-way and two-way coupling
between VISAGE and ECLIPSE, run-launch, and run-management) and post-processing (results
viewing and quality checking).

These allow you to undertake 3D and 4D geomechanical modeling, starting with existing reservoir models,
existing Petrel structural and property models, or new Petrel models created from scratch.

New features in this release include:

Property mapping by regions.

Additional boundary conditions for model initialization.
Two-way coupling between VISAGE geomechanics simulations and ECLIPSE reservoir simulations,
to provide permeability updating in the reservoir simulations and property updating in the
geomechanics simulations.
A unified model developed by ISAMGEO Engineering GmbH, for modeling shear, compaction, creep
and softening behavior in chalks and other weak rocks.
Improved geomechanics results charting, including a cell probe to display the evolution of Mohr's
circles of stress and stress-paths with time.

Licensing and Installation

The simulator checks at run time for valid licenses. This release requires date-based versioned licenses.

The installation instructions for components of Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics (i.e., the Petrel module and
the VISAGE Finite Element geomechanics simulator) are provided in the separate Installation Guide.

Note: If you reconfigure Schlumberger licensing, you must restart all applications that use this licensing.

Note: If you install other Schlumberger simulators (such as ECLIPSE) on the same machine, then the
simulators must be installed in chronological order. For example, Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics 2013.1
(with VISAGE) must be installed before ECLIPSE 2013.2.

Known Issues
This section covers any known issues with Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics and its VISAGE finite element
geomechanics simulator.

If updating the version of Petrel, first uninstall Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics (including VISAGE),
perform the update, and then reinstall Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics.
The two-way coupling available with this release provides permeability updating to the ECLIPSE
reservoir simulation. Two-way coupling with porosity updating is not available.
Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models are supported with this release, but Implicit Fracture
Network (IFN) models are not supported.
Support for nodal-based data (allowing display of distorted grids and surfaces) is not available with
this release.
If a new simulation queue is added in Petrel, this will not immediately appear in the RG Simulation
Launch process. Petrel must be restarted to enable the queue.
The maximum number of processors for running the VISAGE finite element geomechanics simulator
in parallel (MPI) specified in the Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics module is currently one
hundred (100).This release has only been tested to a maximum of 64 processors.
There is a limit of 99 coupled steps when performing two-way coupled simulations with ECLIPSE.
For two-way coupled simulations with ECLIPSE, models should be stored on a local or shared drive
when running on remote Linux systems.
Automatic time-stepping in ECLIPSE can impact results from ECLIPSE restarts. This can cause
differences in two-way coupled simulations. Consult NEXTSTEP keyword in the ECLIPSE
documentation for a solution.
ECLIPSE well connection factors are not recalculated with time in a two-way coupled simulation.
The following Petrel functionality is not supported in this release:
o Running remote cases through EnginFrame.
o Transferring geomechanics information between projects using the Reference Project Tool
(RPT).
o Petrel Uncertainty and Optimization (U&O) workflows.
