Dear Counselor,
On behalf of MIT, I would like to thank you sincerely for your efforts and service through education. My staff and I read every
letter sent in by teachers and counselors from across the planet, and we know for a fact that your comments are instrumental
in helping us to create an amazing freshman class.
You will likely have many secondary school report requests sitting on your desk, and wed like to make this one as painless
as possible. A full and candid report from the school is an integral part of our college application. The MIT Secondary School
Report Form is designed for U.S. school systems but may be adapted for international school use. Since many international
school systems do not calculate GPA or class rank, these spaces may be left blank.
I ask that you submit the following documents to us, to aid in our selection process:
Secondary School Report: Please complete the secondary school report on the next page. If school regulations preclude
disclosure of certain information, indicate that such is the case next to all affected questions.
Transcript: Please attach a copy of the students most recent transcript including:
1. Subjects taken, year taken, and grades: Since many grades are not available until after decisions are made, please
send predicted grades (if available).
2. Subjects failed or repeated
3. Subjects in progress
4. Test results, such as SAT, ACT, or AP; or any external examinations, such as International Baccalaureate, A Levels,
French Baccalaureate, or CBSE, that are required for entrance to universities in your country. (Please note that
these results do not substitute for official score reports.)
Summary and Recommendation: Your written, summative comments on the applicant are most useful during our review
process. Please attach an appraisal, assessing personal and academic qualities that may be an indication of promise as a
college student. In my experience, the most helpful letters contain anecdotes and personal experiences, rather than a listing
of a students achievements, and help paint a complete picture of the applicant.
If you have already drafted a letter, no worries! However, I would appreciate any MIT-specific comments you might have,
which you can write in the blank space on the bottom of the Secondary School Report. Please be sure to include the
applicants name on any attached pages, and keep a copy for your records.
School Profile: This helps to add important context to the application and your comments.
It is our hope that you write candidly. We think the process of mutual selection by college and student can be greatly enhanced
if you discuss openly with the applicant your perceptions of his or her match with MIT as you prepare to fill out this form.
Again, many, many thanks for your words and your time.
Best wishes,
Stu Schmill
