EXempty Exercise 2. Overview of Clients used for

administration

What this exercise is about

This exercise helps familiarize you with the Information Server clients
used for administration. Information Server hosts a complex array of
products. Although you do not need to acquire in-depth knowledge of
all of these products, you need to have some understanding of what
they do and how they are used.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Log into and explore the Information Server Web Console
Administration and Reporting tabs
Log into and explore the Metadata Asset Manager thin client
Log into and explore the WebSphere Application Server (WAS)
Integrated Solutions Console
Log into and explore the Information Server Console
Log into and explore DataStage client functionality
Log into and explore the DataStage and QualityStage Operations
Console
Log into and explore the FastTrack client
Log into and explore Metadata Workbench

Introduction
This exercise familiarizes you with the various Information Server
clients. You will not do much more in any particular client other than
just to log on. Later units will go into more detail.

Requirements
The steps presented in the lab exercises assume you are working
these labs on the course VMWare images. If this is not the case, you
may need to make some adjustments.

Student Exercises

Information Server must be up and running. If the login window for the
Information Server Web Console does not come up in the first task,
then check whether a network connection exists between the Client
and the Server images (ping edserver), and if so check whether
Information Server is running.
In order to view job activity in the Information Server Operations
Console, the AppWatcher.sh services must be running. This lab
assumes these services are not running. In a later unit, you will learn
how to start these services.

EXempty Task: Review and create DataStage credentials

__ 1. Open the Domain Management folder and click Engine Credentials. Select the IS
engine, here edserver.ibm.com, and then click Open Configuration. If you are
performing this lab on the course image, the default credentials have already been
specified. By default all users without credentials are mapped to dsadm. This
dsadm user ID has been created on the Engine operating system.

__ 2. Cancel this window to return to the Engine Credentials tab. Select the Engine
(edserver.ibm.com), and then click Open user Credentials.
__ 3. Browse for user dsuser and add dsuser to the Map User Credentials list.

Copyright IBM Corp. 2007, 2012 Exercise 3. Authentication and Suite Security 3-9
Course materials may not be reproduced in whole or in part
without the prior written permission of IBM.
Student Exercises

__ 4. With dsuser selected, type in credentials for this user in the Assign User
Credentials area. Map dsuser to dsadm / dsadm, which is a valid OS user on the
DataStage Engine system.

__ 5. Click Apply. You should see dsuser mapped to dsadm after you click Apply.

Information

You may be wondering whether you can now log into DataStage using the dsuser ID, since
you have both created the user ID and given it DataStage credentials. The answer is that
you cannot, because you still need to be given authorization to log into DataStage from a
DataStage administrator. This will be explained in more detail in a later unit. For now, you
will just confirm that you cannot log into DataStage with that user ID.

__ 6. Try to log into the DSProject DataStage project in DataStage Designer using the
dsuser/dsuser ID. You will receive the error message: The current user does not
have the required DataStage roles set up.

EXempty Exercise 4. Stopping and Starting Information

Manager

What this exercise is about

This exercise covers the stopping and starting of DataStage and the IS
Metadata Server.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Check for running engine processes
Stop engine services
Stop the ASB agent
Stop the Metadata Server (server1)
Start the IS Metadata Server
Start the ASB agent and DataStage engine
Check DataStage status

Introduction
Information Server is a complex product. Stopping and starting
Information Server involves stopping and starting several different
components and services. This unit discusses each. It also discusses
how you can check whether Information Server has indeed stopped or
started.

Requirements
No new requirements.

Copyright IBM Corp. 2007, 2012 Exercise 4. Stopping and Starting Information Manager 4-1
Course materials may not be reproduced in whole or in part

Student Exercises

Stopping Information Server

Task: Check for running engine processes

__ 1. On your client system, close down all Information Server clients.
__ 2. Log onto your Linux server machine as root/master.
__ 3. Open a terminal window, by clicking on the Terminal icon in the panel.
__ 4. Issue the following command from the command line: ps -ef | grep phantom
This command checks for running DataStage batch jobs. You should not see any
entries other than the message showing that root issued a grep command for
phantom.

Information

ps is a Unix command that displays the currently running processes. grep is a Unix
command that searches text for lines matching a regular expression (phantom in the
example above). In the above command, the output from the ps command (a list of
processes) is searched for a match with phantom.

__ 5. Each client connection to DataStage will initiate both a dsapi process and a dscs
process. To verify that you have no active DataStage connections you should search
for any dsapi or dscs processes. Issue the following command to see this: ps -ef |
grep dsapi, and ps -ef | grep dscs
Again, there should not be any entries other than root. If you see any, then return to
the client system and close any open clients.

__ 6. Now let us see what happens if a DataStage client is running. On the Information
Server client system log into DataStage Designer using student/ student.

V5.4
Student Exercises

EXempty Afterwards, run the two previous commands again on the server system. Notice the
dsadm entries. These are the DataStage processes.

Information

Although you logged into DataStage Designer as student/student, the entry shown lists
dsadm, which is the DataStage administrator user ID specified when DataStage was
installed. The DataStage processes run under this user ID.

__ 7. Now, let us check if dscs is running by entering the command: netstat a | grep
dsrpc. Since the DataStage Designer client is running we should have an
established connection.

Information

The netstat command displays network related information.

__ 8. Close down DataStage Designer, and then run this command again. The
established network connection should disappear.

Student Exercises

Task: Stop engine services

__ 1. Change to the DataStage home directory: cd
/opt/IBM/InformationServer/Server/DSEngine
__ 2. Verify that you are in the DSEngine directory by entering the pwd command.
__ 3. Set up the DataStage environment by running dsenv. Here, you type a period (.)
followed by a space, and then the word dsenv.

EXempty Exercise 6. Engine tier architecture

What this exercise is about

The DataStage parallel engine (also known as the Information Server
engine) is used by several Information Server products and
components. In order to administer it effectively you need to have an
understanding of how it works and how it is configured.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Edit a configuration file
Run a DataStage job from the GUI using the non-default
configuration file
Examine the OSH and Score
Run a job from the command line
Administer the Engine from the command line
Use the DSXImportService command to list the contents of a
DataStage import (dsx) file
Use the DSXImportService command to import a DataStage import
(dsx) file

Introduction
Every parallel job run by the DataStage parallel engine runs under a
configuration file. The configuration file identifies the nodes the jobs
operators can run on, and the resources it can use. In the first task you
learn how to edit a configuration file, and to run a job using that
configuration file. You learn how to run the job from the DataStage
Designer GUI as well as from the DataStage Server command line.

Requirements
You have a DataStage project named DSProject.
DSProject contains a folder named _Training_ISAdmin.
The GenRows job exists in your _Training_ISAdmin>Jobs folder.

EXempty Exercise 8. Engine tier connectivity

What this exercise is about

Database connectivity for Information Server hosted products is
established and configured in the Engine. This includes native
database connectivity as well as ODBC connectivity. This unit
discusses how to set up this connectivity.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Enable a DataStage project to access DB2
Globally enable access to DB2
Setup ODBC data source connections
Test ODBC connectivity using the dssh command on the Server
Test ODBC connectivity using DataStage Designer client import
utility

Introduction
In order to establish connectivity to DB2 it is necessary to set the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to point to the DB2 library.
This can be done for a DataStage project using DataStage
Administrator, but it is necessary to edit the dsenv file to establish
these settings globally for all Information Server products and
components.
ODBC connectivity is also established and configured in the Engine.
This involves editing two files: .odbc.ini and uvodbc.config.

__ 5. Examine the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. Notice that it contains a path to the DB2
library. Although this is something that has already been done for you, this setting is
necessary for native DB2 access.

__ 6. Select the Operator Specific folder. Examine APT_DB2INSTANCE_HOME and

APT_DBNAME. These variables are specific to DB2. The former identifies the DB2
instance home directory. The latter specifies a default DB2 database for access in
DataStage jobs.

EXempty Exercise 9. Engine tier monitoring

What this exercise is about

This exercise covers the monitoring of running DataStage jobs in
Director, and the monitoring of DataStage jobs in the DataStage and
QualityStage Operations Console. It also discusses how to monitor the
performance of jobs using the Performance Analyzer, and monitoring
job resource usage using the Resource Estimator tool.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Monitor jobs in DataStage Director
Start the Operations Console services
Monitor jobs using the DataStage Operations Console
Explore Workload Manager
Use Performance Analyzer to analyze the performance of a job

Introduction
There are several ways to monitor DataStage jobs as they are
running. The DataStage Designer and Director clients can be used to
view the logs and status of running jobs and to display performance
statistics.
The DataStage and QualityStage Operations Console can be used to
monitor running DataStage jobs across all projects and engines. You
can also use it to monitor system resources (memory, CPU) while the
jobs are running.
Workload Manager enables you to control the maximum number of
jobs running at one time, and to prioritize which jobs run when the
maximum is reached.
