Standard Method of Test for Elastic Recovery Test of Bituminous Materials by Means of a Ductilometer AASHTO Designation: T 301-99 (2003) 1. 12. SCOPE This method is to determine the elastic recovery of bituminous material through the use of a ductilometer and briquet specimens. The specimens are pulled apart at $ cm/min and held after a specified elongation. The speciinens are then severed at the center and allowed to recover. undisturbed for one hour. This test may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This test does not purport 10 address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory imitations prior to use. 24 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS ASTM Standard: E77, Standard Test Method for Inspection and Verification of Thermometers 3.4 3.2. 3.3. 3.4. TS-2a APPARATUS ‘Molds—The mold shall be similar in design to that shown in the following Figure 1. The mold. shall be made of brass. The dimensions of the assembled mold shal! be as shown with the permissible variations indicated Base Plate—The base plate shall be made of non-absorbent material of sufficient thickness to prevent deformation and of a sufficient size to hold from one to three molds. The plate shall be uniformly flat to insure that the bottom surfaces of each mold will touch it throughout, Water Bath—The water bath shall be maintained at the specified test temperature, varying not more than £0.5°C (41.0°P) from this temperature. The volume of water shall not be less than 10 L. The depth of water shall not be less than 50 mm and such that the mold can be immersed toa depth of 25 mm. The water in the bath shall be free from oil and slime or other organic growth, Thermometers—For wsts at 25°C (17°F) use ASTM Saybolt Viscosity Thermometer No. 17C (17F) to measure the temperature of the water bath and the temperature of the water in the testing machine. For tests at other temperatures, use ASTM thermometers of an appropriate range and accuracy equal to that of the No. 17. Since the accuracy of the test results is dependent upon closely controlled conditions of temperature, the thermometers should be calibrated in accordance with ASTM E 77. 7 T 301-7 ~ AASHTO Thickness of all Parts: 10.00 mm Notes: — 10.85 CT 30.00 3.00—-| 16.85 J [acoso 36.00: 1. Testing Machine—For pulling the briquet of bituminous material apart, any apparatus may be used which is so constructed that the specimen will be continuously immersed in water as specified in Section 4.5 while the two clips are pulled apart at a uniform speed, without undue vibration, Heater—An oven or hot plate, heated by electricity or gas, may be used to melt the bituminous material TS-2a 7301-2 AASHTO 37. 3.8, Container—Any suitable container may be used to hold the bituminous material while being melted. Trimmer—Any convenient implement, such as a putty knife or spatula, may be used provided that the cutting edge is straight and at least 38 mm (1's, in.) wide. 4A. 42. 43, 44 45 PROCEDURE Preparation of Apparatus—Assemble the mold on the base plate. To prevent the material under test from sticking, coat the surface of the plate and the intcrior surfaces of sides with a suitable release agent (Note 1). Note 1—Mixtures of glycerin and dextrine or tale (3 g glycerin to about 5 g dextrine or talc has been used satisfactorily), Dow-Corning Silicone Stop-Cock Grease, or castor oil-Versamid 900 (100:1 mixture by weight heated to 204 to 232°C (400 to 450°F) and stirred until homogeneous) has proven suitable. Other release agents may be used provided results obtained are comparable to those obtained when using one of the above. Ifthe residue of a polymer modified emulsion is being tested, the bituminous material for running the test should be the residue obtained by means of oven evaporation of the emulsion sample at 162.8 + 2.5°C (325 + 5°F), not by means of distillation. ‘Molding Test Specimens—Heat the sample with care to prevent local overheating until it has, become sufficiently fluid to pour. After thorough stirring, pour the bituminous material into the mold taking care not to entrain any air bubbles. Pour the material in a thin stream back and forth from end to end until the mold is more than level full. In filling the mold, take care not to disarrange the parts of the mold and distort the briquet. Let the mold and contents cool to room temperature for 30 to 40 minutes. Then place the base plate and filled mold in the water bath maintained at the specified test temperature for 30 minutes. Remove the base plate and filled mold from the water bath, and with a hot trimmer cut off the excess bitumincus material so that the mold is just level full. Take care during the trimming operation that the specimen is not pulled away from the base plate or from the side pieces of the mold. Keeping Specimen at Standard Temperature—Place the base plate and filled mold in the water bath or testing machine and keep at the specified temperaisre for 85 to 95 minutes. The test will bbe conducted at the specified temperature. Remove the briquet from the plate, detach the side pieces, and immediately test the briquet. Testiny—At the start of the test, the water in the tank of the testing machine shall cover the specimen both above and below and shall be at least 25 mini. Attach the clips to the pins or hooks of the force adapter and the testing machine and pull the clips apart at 5 em/min 45.0 percent, until the briquet has been elongated to 20 em. After 20 cm has been reached, stop the ductilometer, and hold the specimen in its elongated position for five minutes. After five minutes, sever the specimen at its center with a pair of scissors and allow the specimen to remain in the ductilometer, undisturbed, for one hour. At the end of one hour, release the ductilometer from the drive mechanism and retract the half sample until the ends of the severed sample just touch. Read the ductilometer pointer and record the value, TS-2a 7301-3 AASHTO 5. REPORT 5A. Report the percent elongation recovery to the whole number percent. The elongation recovery is given by the following equation: 20-X % Elongation Recovery = aD 100 @ where: X = final reading in centimeters after bringing the two severed ends of the specimen back together. 6.
