Proposed Three-Year Budget for 2017-2018/ 2018-2019/ 2019-2020
The Whitesville Road Media Center is rather large for an elementary school, so it has
plenty of space to accommodate the population of between 625-675 students. The demographics
of this school prove that it is predominantly low income students and families (100% of students
are on free breakfast/lunch plans) and over of the student population are African- American.
Funding for this Media Center solely relies on what the state provides, although a minimal
amount of money is made from the book fair every year.
There is no Media Committee at Whitesville Road, although this past year was a pilot
year for a Reading Incentives Committee to get students interested in reading and going to the
library. Because there is no designated committee for materials, it is solely the Media Specialists
responsibility to make sure that all materials are aligned to a Common Core standard. She also
must make sure that she asks questions during staff meetings to find out teachers thoughts on
what materials they are in need of. The plan I have developed is to extend continue to update
areas of the library which are constantly in need of new resources as well as giving the library a
functional areas that will allow for a makerspace.

BOOKS: Due to the ever changing curriculum, I have allotted a budget that will allow for each section to
be weeded and replaced each year. This budget will be able to stretch across all grade levels and allow
for multiple new books in each section at each grade level.

PERIODICALS: I put a minimal amount of the budget toward periodicals, because at the elementary age
there is not near the use for them as older grades. I have allowed for two periodicals as a trial run to see
if they would be used. If not, after the three years, I would remove this from the budget. The two
periodicals to be purchase are Ask and Ranger Rick, both of which will be geared toward science, which
is where test scores have proved a struggle.

VIDEOS: Because educational videos can easily break up monotony in the classroom, I have allowed for
a small budget here based on the needs of teachers. Videos can be difficult to align perfectly with
standards, however, and many short video clips can be found for free on the internet. There are also
subscriptions to things like BrainPop which allow teachers to use short clips without the Media Center
having to make a purchase.

SOFTWARE: This portion of the budget is for the beginnings of an elibrary. There is not currently a
collection of ebooks in this library, but with the focus becoming more and more geared toward
technology, I think that this will be a great way to utilize the 3 Chromebook carts that have been
previously purchased for our library. Unfortunately most of this budget will be at a subscription cost, but
I think after students and teachers become more comfortable with their resources, this will be a great
one!

EQUIPMENT: Although funding for the library does not include computers, it does include the
equipment necessary to have morning broadcast. This portion of the budget is small because I wanted
to keep it merely for small updates (a new microphone, new backdrop, etc.) each year if the need is
there. I also have included in the budget for headphones. Students are constantly on the computers and
the wear and tear of these means that new ones will need to be purchased each year. There will also be
a small portion for Smart board pens included in the headphones category. The makerspace portion of
the budget is large due to there not being a makerspace area in the media center yet. I think that
building this portion of the library up will be an upfront cost, but after three years if the materials are
sufficient, this cost can be directed elsewhere.
