Succession Planning
Succession planning refers to the process of identifying and developing the future
leadership of the company. Succession planning is especially important given that the baby
boomers are preparing to retire or reduce their participation in organizations, creating vacancies
at all management levels. It requires senior management to systematically conduct a review of
leadership talent in the company. It ensures that top-level managerial talent is available. It
provides a set of development experiences that managers must complete to be considered for top
management positions, which avoids premature promotion of managers who are not ready for
upper-management ranks.
It also helps in attracting and retaining managerial employees by providing them with
development opportunities that they can complete if upper-level management is a career goal for
them.
