Walkup Aquatic Center
Senior Lifeguard Dacotah Hofer presented Swimming Safety at this years Safety Town Program. Dacotah taught
the children about safe behavior in, on and around the water. One way to help reduce drowning incidents among
children ages 5 through 12 is to teach water safety education. His presentation was designed to give children an
awareness of being safe around the water. Below are some simple sayings:
All over the world, infants and toddlers (0-5 years old) drown more frequently than people at any other age. In this
age group drowning is the leading cause of death, followed by accidents in and around the home and road traffic
accidents. With adequate supervision around the water, you can prevent a tragedy before it happens.
Triathlon approaching soon July 30. The Aquatic Center will be closed all day for the event. Splash and Dash dates
remaining at the Aquatic Center July 6 and 20. Or be sure to get your swim in throughout the week.
Community Collaborations
Science Fest: Is right around the corner and staff is assisting Science Fest event coordinators with program at Ashely
Pond, Entrance Park, and Bathtub Row Brewing (BRB). Staff has attended meetings to assist with logistics including
event set-up, parking and road closures, park conditions, and outdoor movie events at Ashley Pond and (BRB).
Granite Mountain Filming: Parks and Recreation Staff have been working with the Granite Mountain Film crew and
Kelly Stewart to assist with filming in County parks. The GMF crew had the road closed to Camp May from June 20th
29th, yet in the midst of filming, a weekend wedding had been scheduled and everyone worked closely with the family
to ensure parking and facilities were accessible. PROS Staff are coordinating with Environmental Services to
coordinate film equipment staging in the parking lot of the White Rock transfer station for the month of August.

Community Collaborations (continued)
4th of July Planning: PROS Division staff have been meeting with the Kiwanis, LAPD, LAFD, Roads and Streets, and
Atomic City Transit to coordinate the 2016 Kiwanis 4th of July event at Overlook Park. A few changes for 2016 include
additional field lighting for after the event provided by Roads and Streets, spray painted emergency pathways on
Spiro Field for quicker emergency access, and possibly one additional bus stop/pick-up in White Rock.
Model Ts: The Tin Lizzies of Albuquerque hosted the Model T Ford Club of Americans Land of Enchantment Tour
from June 26 July 1 which brought approximately 90 Model Ts to Los Alamos County on June 27th & 28th.
Downtown Los Alamos was filled with all colors and sizes of Tin Lizzies and their drivers as our participants visited
Bandelier National Monument and spent an afternoon visiting Main Street Los Alamos on June 27 th. On June 28th the
Model T Convoy took State Road 501 Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway from White Rock up and
through the Jemez back to Albuquerque. Many Divisions in the County worked together to ensure this tour group had
a thoroughly enjoyable visit in our community and to our various attractions.
