‘A FEW WORDS FROM CHARLES BERLITZ WORLD FAMOUS LINGUIST Let me introduce you to the cassette course you have chosen to study. in it you will find the basic, phrases needed for communication in this lan: ‘guage. There are two important things to remem- ber about learning a new language: Be interested in the people, their country and language. Want to learn the language. Practice it as often as you can. Nothing is more effective in creating a friendly atmo- ‘sphere and nothing flatters people more than when a foreigner trles to speak thelr language. The voice on these cassettes will say a phrase in English. Then you will hear the translation of the phrase repeated twice. During the pause after the second repetition, repeat the phrase aloud. Try to iitate te profuncialion as nearly fas you can. Read the words as they are spoken on the cas- sette and use the guide to help you remember the words and pronounce them during the pauses. Remember, knowing the language is the best way of knowing the country and enjoying it more. Commonweal ot Independant VOCABULARY INDEX cceeeeeees a ‘States (CIS), Russian was the offical language ofthe Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic (RSFSR), and the second official language in the national republics and autonomous regions of the USSR. ‘Today, Flussian is the native language of some 160 milion ‘people in the former Soviet territory. Its the official language (of the Russian Republic, ands one of the six oficial languages of the United Nations Organization. Russian is also spoken by milions of descendants of Russian immigrants throughout the world, Russian belongs to the Slavic branch of the Indo-European group of languages. Other languages of the Slavic branch include Ukrainian, Byelorussian, Bulgarian, Siovak, Slovene, Polish, Czech, Serbian and Croatian. A knowledge of Russian will help you to communicate with speakers of these languages which are much more similar to Russian than French or Spanish, for example, are to English, English has borrowed a numbor of words from Russian, including balalaika (a stringed musical instrument), troika (a sled pulled by three horses; or a group of three), and babushka (meaning grandmother in Russian — with the accent (on the first syllable - but offen used in English with the accent ton the second syllable to refer to a woman's headscarf), Russian Is writen in the Cyrilic alphabet and many of its thiny-three letters closely resemble Greek letters on which ‘the Cyrillic alphabet was originally based. When you start the cassette player, you will hear the sounds of the Russian vowels and consonants. You will then hear English phrases immediately translated into Russian, Each Russian phrase is repeated, then followed by a pause. During the pause, say the Russian phrase aloud. ER sts show that a word spoken ten to twonty times ic remembered more readily than a word seen fitty to one hundred! times, so say the phrases aloud as often as possible, When you hear words spoken by Russian-speaking people, In conversation and on television or radio, say them to yourselt Try to pronounce words you see on signs and in books, magazines, and newspapers. PRONUNCIATION HINTS. Russian is @ phonetic language, meaning that each letter or combination of letters has, by and large, only one sound, There are exceptions to rules of pronunciation in every language, but in Russian these exceptions are few. This ‘makes Russian quite easy to pronounce once you remember the basic principles (see the pronunciation chart). Note that, throughout the text, sounds that are writtan alike may vary in pronunciation depending on adjacent sounds (or ‘even on the social situation). Training your ear to detect ‘these variations will sharpen not only your pronunciation skils Dut also your understanding of spoken Russian. Only ono syllable is stressed in each word. Most of the Russian vowel sounds are only heard distinctly when they ‘occur within the stressed sylable. Thus, unstressed o sounds lke , unstressed and unstrassed e sound tke i In the Pronunciation column in this course, words of more than one syllable have an accent over the stressed vowel. You wi notice that the g sound (r) is pronounced as av in words such as ero (yevo) and wero (chevo), and that the ch sound (4) is pronounced as sh in the word sro (shto) The Key to Pronunciation which follows will help you to read and pronounce Russian. Listen to the sounds of the Russian letters as they are pronounced for you. The guide uses ‘systematic approximations of Russian vowels and consonants based on sounds familiar to a speaker of American English. This guide should corve to holp you loam the Russian alphabet ‘and sound system. The best way to perfect your pronunciation is to listen closely to the Russian speakers, and imitate their Pronunciation ‘Now start the cassette on side 1 BS Side 1 THE RUSSIAN ALPHABET ABBIAEEX9MHKIMMONPCTY OX UMMM BIWOA SOUNDS OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE 2 § Fiz i 2 ? = = fe B83 fs fF § ef toe é@ ed é DIPHTHOWOS" mya ay i ‘aseyinprey ey acre. deetyey wt apasinece iy pyocni roo aiy vou of as ayintoy oy vi i bucy00y tn Simao cury iy pat enoeniy wou ner vowers Twn tossed ah vase aby wo asnfaher won urstested, 8 apiyiarboos wien sessed, yo anna ap-yea enn a ovtao, aye vw wher urstessed, 02 xapre—_kanrstee Soce myen * Diphthongs are combinations of two vowel sounds win ane sylable IEC gs £ & § £ £ BE Eos / foes @ 5 iy § é gf, #2 & oy sy es § #é 3 es ¢§ i $98 é3 éf_ as és 232 é ‘similar to, yo camouiér sa-ma-lyot . v ANHO vee-no yoin yore f—propai ftor-nik eeva voiceless sound, H re essen. ee na pee-va or at the end of when unstressed, i sow iz-yoom a ward, 08 fin ft asiinpin r asgingst og rae—gdye ce mey before a voice- k cue anyek i yin wom seyinboy __y voi moy Tess sound, or > when sessed, © wowep —-no-meer atthe end of 2 330 nor word, as Kin kit when unstressed, arog — - oe _ asainnat ‘ wsdindog = dah - —— before a {morgan vee-na- y 09 xype_koors voiceless sour, grant — ‘ewe ee oral the end of @ 2 aseiniet 2 eta word, as tin top = as in you np _by00-70 oe - — —_ssinyu_yoo_swpo_by x assin measure 2h xnny —zhi-voo : when stressed, ye xtuoxn yarblad before a oh tom nosh a3 ya in yard voiceless sound, when unstressed, ye or at the end of ‘a8 ye in yot ‘word, as sh " ‘say 00 in boot, _ instow - but spread ips 3 aszinzoo. «7 ~~ wan _-mah-yoo and arch back ot ___8zinz00 - znahyoo anes ren back oe ekinkt ok oxo tO SONSONANTS @slinmiddle 1 manna tanm-pa : webnba baa yoo 1 esminman me _teryo@ before a P —rapaepos gar-dee- " @Sfinnote nm wore nargah voiceless"* Top Oe . beer poles 2 aspinpin pam ya fond of a word, > asaroledr ¢ pycennt roosky as pinpit —_ id see © as $in sit 8 cpena__stidah * Voiceless sounds are 16,7, #4, and ux se é é i, gg 7 gap é oe ee Caw tahm f worpe—ko-fye cechinthe th ony Brechoo German “Bach” astsinfas is wer _teyet aschinetep ch ah ehay a shin short shyest borsch ‘The hard sign has no sound alse ~The soft sign nom nor madeacihty cous coom'ya feud tthe pocsng toreona ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION PYCCKMA GENERAL EXPRESSIONS SALUTATIONS TPHBETCTBHA Helo! zarahst-vooy-iyel _Sapancrayiiel™ Welcome! da-bro spo pazhah-o-va — noxanonars, Good morning. do-bra-ye oo-ta. —_Aoopoe yspo.
