I. NAME OF ACTIVITY
Study Visit to Germany

II. THEME
Renewable Energy

III. MOTIVATIONAL BACKGROUND

It is common knowledge that fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources where the
process takes too long. If the source of this energy is used continuously, it will lack that
eventually resulted in energy crisis.

Therefore, the use of energy from fossil fuels must be balanced with renewable energy
sources such as bio-gas, solar cells, bio-mass, wind, bio-oil, and others. Indonesia has great
potential for renewable energy one of which is biomass. Biomass can be used as a
counterweight and minimize dependence on fossil fuels. Biomass can be processed into bio-
gas as a counterweight natural gas, bio-oil as a counterweight oil and coal briquettes as a
counterweight and gas. In addition, the processing can be done simply and individuals.

Indonesia has resources that can be used as a biomass such as rice, corn, sugar cane, palm
oil, and many others. We take examples, based on the data information from Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nation. Rice producer no.1 in the world is China with as
many as 193 million tons every year, whereas Indonesia is the third with only 60.2 million tons
every year. For corn the producing country no.1 in the world is the USA with as many as 307
million tons every year. Indonesia produced only 16.3 million tons. Sugar cane producer no.1 in
the world is Brazil with as many as 734 million tons (2011) whereas Indonesia produces only 24
million tons. On the other side, the 1st producer of palm oil in the world is Indonesia, with as
many as 31.10 million tons (2015).

As a student of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic which is currently incorporated in the matter of

energy research team has been conducting research and review to solve the issues of energy
which is currently a problem in the world. Thats why we will take the title of "Potential of
Biomass in Indonesia to Overcome the Energy Crisis" and "Application of Visual-Based
Sensor to Detect Focal Point on Palm Oil Field.
Biomass is one of the biggest potential in Indonesia. Utilization of oil palm biomass can
come from many parts such as palm kernel shells, that are not been exploited well so far.
Indonesia produced about 31.10 million tons of palm oil, exporting 14.47 million tons, while in
2016, the average growth rate of export volume of palm oil CPO has had an increase of 12.94%
per year with an increase in the average export value of 25.76% per year. Realization of palm
oil commodity exports in 2013 has reached a volume of 20.58 million tons (palm oil / CPO and
other palm oil) amounted to US $ 15.84 million. The export volume of palm oil commodity
until September 2016 reached 15.96 million tons amount 12.75 million US $. This is an
increase of 7.59% when compared to the volume of exports up to September 2013 which
amounted to 14.831 million tons and is supported by extensive oil palm plantations covering an
area of 2.30 million hectares in Riau province that has the largest oil palm plantations followed
by North Sumatra area of 1,39 million hectares, Central Kalimantan Province, covering an area
of 1.16 million hectares and South Sumatera with an area of 1.11 million hectares and the other
provinces.

Based on these data to make Indonesia as the largest palm oil country producer in the
world, it is because of oil palm plantations fertile to grow in various islands in Indonesia and
supported by two seasons that exist in Indonesia. There are not only positive impacts like
global warming which could increase the geothermal increases and it could also cause actual
hotspots that can provide by inflammation a major risk for oil palm plantations besides their
illegal logging make the biggest enemy for oil palm farmers in Indonesia. Therefore, we need a
way to overcome these problems. The research team of the State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya has
delivered solutions to minimize the problem by applying detection sensors hotspots through
visual so the results are much better and more accurate than have to use a temperature sensor or
sensor methane.

So the application through a visual sensor can be the fastest solution to detect fires,
and a solution in decreasing global warming and illegal logging is a major impact on living
organisms dwelling in the forest one of them prevent the extinction of the orangutan.

Based on the problems mentioned above, we are confident that the DAAD program is the
right program as a place for the German students and Indonesian students to exchange
information, to learn together, and to find solutions of the problems by synchronizing
between Germany technology and Indonesian sources that have not been processed
effectively. And it will be applied in both countries and even i n the world. Considering
there has not at all a representation of students from the Polytechnic in Indonesia DAAD
study visit program, we are hoping to be pioneer and inspiring other students to actively
take part in this kind of program so that we could be equal with other universities in Indonesia.

The University of Hohenheim is a campus university located in the south of Stuttgart,

Germany. Founded in 1818 it is Stuttgart's oldest university. Its primary areas of specialization
had traditionally been agricultural and natural sciences. Today, however, the majority of its
students are enrolled in one of the many study programs offered by the faculty of business,
economics and social sciences. The faculty has regularly been ranked among the best in the
country, making the University of Hohenheim one of Germany's top-tier universities in these
fields. The university maintains academic alliances with a number of partner universities and is
involved in numerous joint research projects.
