II. THEME
Renewable Energy
It is common knowledge that fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources where the
process takes too long. If the source of this energy is used continuously, it will lack that
eventually resulted in energy crisis.
Therefore, the use of energy from fossil fuels must be balanced with renewable energy
sources such as bio-gas, solar cells, bio-mass, wind, bio-oil, and others. Indonesia has great
potential for renewable energy one of which is biomass. Biomass can be used as a
counterweight and minimize dependence on fossil fuels. Biomass can be processed into bio-
gas as a counterweight natural gas, bio-oil as a counterweight oil and coal briquettes as a
counterweight and gas. In addition, the processing can be done simply and individuals.
Indonesia has resources that can be used as a biomass such as rice, corn, sugar cane, palm
oil, and many others. We take examples, based on the data information from Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nation. Rice producer no.1 in the world is China with as
many as 193 million tons every year, whereas Indonesia is the third with only 60.2 million tons
every year. For corn the producing country no.1 in the world is the USA with as many as 307
million tons every year. Indonesia produced only 16.3 million tons. Sugar cane producer no.1 in
the world is Brazil with as many as 734 million tons (2011) whereas Indonesia produces only 24
million tons. On the other side, the 1st producer of palm oil in the world is Indonesia, with as
many as 31.10 million tons (2015).
Based on these data to make Indonesia as the largest palm oil country producer in the
world, it is because of oil palm plantations fertile to grow in various islands in Indonesia and
supported by two seasons that exist in Indonesia. There are not only positive impacts like
global warming which could increase the geothermal increases and it could also cause actual
hotspots that can provide by inflammation a major risk for oil palm plantations besides their
illegal logging make the biggest enemy for oil palm farmers in Indonesia. Therefore, we need a
way to overcome these problems. The research team of the State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya has
delivered solutions to minimize the problem by applying detection sensors hotspots through
visual so the results are much better and more accurate than have to use a temperature sensor or
sensor methane.
So the application through a visual sensor can be the fastest solution to detect fires,
and a solution in decreasing global warming and illegal logging is a major impact on living
organisms dwelling in the forest one of them prevent the extinction of the orangutan.
Based on the problems mentioned above, we are confident that the DAAD program is the
right program as a place for the German students and Indonesian students to exchange
information, to learn together, and to find solutions of the problems by synchronizing
between Germany technology and Indonesian sources that have not been processed
effectively. And it will be applied in both countries and even i n the world. Considering
there has not at all a representation of students from the Polytechnic in Indonesia DAAD
study visit program, we are hoping to be pioneer and inspiring other students to actively
take part in this kind of program so that we could be equal with other universities in Indonesia.
IV. OBJECTIVE
General :
2. To learn about Renewable Energy related knowledge by visit and meet German
Universities.
3. To gain understanding and insights (regional and area studies) of economic, political
and cultural life in Germany.
Specific :
1. Exchange information about renewable energy from palm oil and biomass in order to
achieve well-being in the future energy.
2. Work together to find alternative energy which is effective and good for the
environment.
3. Combining the natural wealth of Indonesia and Germany advanced technology to
obtain renewable energy
4. Gaining more information about biomass and technology sensor.
V. OUTCOMES
General :
1. Deeper knowledge related to the development of renewable energy.
2. Greater understanding and insights (regional and area studies) on economic, political
and cultural aspects in Germany, which will also have implications towards the
development of renewable energy.
3. Strong bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Germany, especially in research and
development of science and technology.
Specific :
2. Spreading the results of the comparative study of biogas production from aquatic
weeds , water hyacinth and microalgae to the students of energy engineering also State
Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in Palembang.
VI. ACTIVITIES
2. Program Execution
d. City Tour
The purpose of this activity is introducing Germany as one of the most developed
countries in the World to Indonesian students in culture, social, and other aspects.
Study visit will be held from 28th February until 8th March 2017 and will be concentrated
on the cities Cologne, Stuttgart and Augsburg. A number of important activities in these three
cities are described below.
1. Technical University of Cologne
2. University of Hohenheim
3. Helmholtz Institutes
On the campus of 96 000 m there are 20 buildings with a total lab area of 7 000 m. The
extensive infrastructure on the campus also includes the technology platforms. Besides their own
laboratories, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell
Cultures and the pharmaceutical biotechnology labs of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology
and Experimental Medicine (ITEM) are located on their campus. Another guest on their grounds
is the school lab BioS.
