Week 1

Solfa Notation
Solfa Notation is the set of syllables sung to the notes of the scale e.g.

do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do., instead of singing C, D, E, F, G, A, B C.

Solfa notationis used, especially to teach singing.

Recorder Parts and Posture


The recorder is a woodwind instrument.

It has 3 parts: the headjoint (also called the mouthpiece), the body joint

and the foot joint..

Step 1 - Posture:

Sit up straight in a relaxed manner. Keep your arms by your body. Figure 1 Recorder Parts

After puttingthe recorder in your mouth, bend it downwards slightly so

you can see.

. Embouchure and Finger Placement


Step 2 - Embouchure

This is the placementof the mouth on the instrument. Place a very

small amount of the mouth piece into your mouth, without touching the

instrument with your teeth. Dont worry about finger placement yet.

Blow very gently into the recorder. Start each note you ply with a

doo syllable.

Step 3 - Finger placement

The left hand holds the TOP of the recorder while the right Figure 2Embouchure and Posture

of your finger tips to cover the holes. Start by picking up the

recorder by the foot joint. place your lefthand thumb on the

Week 2

The Staff
The staff is made up of 5 lines and 4 spaces. Its lines and spaces are counted

from the bottom to the top. Each line and space represents a musical pitch.

Musical notes and musical symbols are written on a staff.

There are 3 types of staves:

1. The TREBLE staff. 2. The BASS staff

3. And the GRAND (or GREAT) staff, which is a combination of the

treble and bass staves.

THE PIANO KEYBOARD

There are white and black keys on the piano keyboard.

The white keys are named using the alphabets A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

The black keys are grouped in TWOS and THREES.

The note C, is found to the left of the 2 black keys

Week 3
The Clef.

The clef is a sign placed at the beginning of a staff to show the pitch (notes) of

that staff.

There are 2 types of clefs;

1. The treble clef; also called the G clef 2. The bass clef, also called the F clef.

The treble clef indicates that the name The bass clef indicates that the name

of the first line of the staff is E. of the first line of the staff is G.

PIANO: MIDDLE C ON THE STAFF

Music is written on the lines and spaces of a staff.

The notes written on the staff, tells us what keys to play on the piano.

There are different types of notes, but first we shall learn the semibreve. A staff

It tells us to play a note on the piano, that is 4 counts long.

THE TREBLE STAFF

This is the treble staff. It is the combination of a TREBLE CLEF (G

CLEF) and A STAFF. The treble clef tells us the name of the first line

is E.

The names of the lines of the treble staff are E, G, B, D, F.

A reminder, for the lines of the treble staff is

The names of the spaces of the treble staff are F, A, C, E.

Week 6

Piano: Middle C as a Semibreve

Each finger has a number. The thumbs are both numbered 1

Everytime you see middle C on the bass staff, Everytime you see middle C on the treble

you play middle C on the piano, with the staff, you play middle C on the piano, with

LEFT HAND THUMB. the RIGHT HAND THUMB.

Play with leftt hand thumb. Count to 4 for every note you play.

THE BASS STAFF

This is the bass staff. It is the combination of a BASS CLEF (F

CLEF) and A STAFF. The bass clef tells us the name of the first line

is G.

The names of the lines of the bass staff are G, B, D, F.A.

Week 8

Recorder Song: Little Fly


This song uses ONLY note B

This is note B the staff. This is note B the recorder

1. SAY the words to the song.

2. CLAP in time with the words as you say them.

3. Observe how somw words lasts longer than others.

4. Play the tune on your recorder. Use note B. Make sure the notes match

the pattern of the words.
