T his paper attempts to discuss the major diff erences between systemic-functional linguistics and trans-
f orm ational-generative linguistics by examining how t hese t wo schools of linguistics look at the nat ure of
language , t he t asks of ling uists and t he research methodology .
It also touches upon the questio n w hether it is
possible for them to reach a com promise .

Bakhtin pio neered and advocated a sociological approach to the study of lang uage at a time when st ruc-
turalism held t he sw ay both in literature and in linguistics .While structural linguists w ere almost solely
concerned wi th the abst ract linguistic system , Bakhtin devoted himself to the specificat ion of t he dialog ic
nature of ut terance in its social context .In a sense , Bakhtin w as a f orerunner of t he present-day pragmat-

Language and gender has alw ay s been one of the focuses of attentio n in sociolinguistics and cultural
ling uistics , studies on which are in the ascendant in t he Russian linguistic field .The present paper intro-
duces two theoretical sources concerning t he question proper and t he major research content , summarizes
the achievements made by Russian linguists in this f ield , analyzes it s characteristic features dif ferent from
those in Europe and China , ex plains t he use of t he basic terminology , and finally makes some predictions on
the prospect s of the relevant research t heo ries and practices .

T here is no precise correspondence betw een sem antic roles and elements of syntactic f unctions .The se-
mantic roles of t he noun phrases are determined by t he lex ical and grammatical meanings which constitute
the proposi tional co ntent of the sentence .It is for prag mat ic purposes that the same propositional content is
expressed wi th different syntactic structures , in w hich the syntactic status of the noun phrases of particular
semantic roles may undergo changes in terms of promotion and demotion .
