Welcome to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

By now you will have your new Macbook Air.

CAUTION: The Macbook Air is installed with OSX10.10. Do not attempt to install other operating systems on this
machine as they cannot be supported.

Tip:
To get maximum battery life, charge the laptop fully and let it completely run out before you charge it again. Do this
three to four times at the beginning of use. If at any stage during the Macbook lifetime, the battery starts to fail repeat
this procedure.

What do I do if I have a problem?

For more information about setting up your Macbook, installing software and any other
queries please go to the IT Support section of Moodle.

This is the IT support page on the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle). This page
contains a discussion forum, a frequently asked questions section and other information
about application installations.

If you have a technical problem with your Macbook please contact the IT helpdesk on
extension 2273, via the IT Forums in Moodle or via e-mail on helpdesk@rcsi.ie

An IT Support team member will diagnose and repair your Macbook for you. Please note
that it is your responsibility to back up your data. If your Macbook system needs to be
reinstalled you run the risk of losing any data that you have on the Macbook if you do not
back it up.

Your Macbook will be restored by an IT Support team member to a out of the box status,
i.e. you will receive your repaired Macbook back with a new Operating System installed
along with the applications that came pre-installed with the machine. Please back up your
data.

Step 1: Power Up
Connect adapter to a wall socket and the Power Connector on the back of the Macbook.

Once FileVault is enabled you will need to set a Password and create a Recovery Key. Please note you will need these
to access your data and documents on the computer once the system is enabled. You can store this password in iCloud
using your Apple ID in case you forget it later.

The IT Department will not be able to recover encrypted data from your computer if you have lost or forgotten the
Password and Recovery Key.

For information on enabling and using FileVault please visit following links to the Apple Support site, please note the
version of the operating system is OS X 10.10 Yosemite:

Important notes for Macbook owners
You have been issued a Macbook to assist you in the successful completion of your studies here at RCSI. Please be
aware that it is your responsibility to insure the computer, to look after it and keep it in full working order.

It will be up to you to replace the computer should you lose it or should it be stolen. If this is not done, there will be
no provision made for you in the event that you are required to use the computer for educational purposes such as
online study and online examinations. In the case of online exams, if you are unable to use your computer through your
negligence in not having looked after it properly, or as a result of it being stolen but not replaced, you will be awarded a
mark of zero for that examination.

It is extremely important to note that only computers running Mac OSX10.10 will be supported by the helpdesk and
that under no circumstances will support be extended to those students running into software incompatibilities after
changing their operating system.

The Macbook remains the property of RCSI until such time as you graduate. Should you leave the RCSI before gradua-
tion, or in the event of your being discontinued at any stage during the course, you must return the computer to RCSI.
