About the course:

German 1 is an introduction to the language
and culture of the German-speaking world. In
this year-long course, you will practice
speaking, listening, reading, and writing in
German and learn about German culture.

German is an interactive class and has an

emphasis on communication. If you actively
participate, use the language, and challenge
yourself, you will be able to understand and
say a lot by the end of the year!

COURSE OBJECTIVES
BY THE END OF THE YEAR, YOU CAN...

Introduce yourself and others.

Talk about your school, family, and what you
like to do in your free time.
Describe a typical day in the life of a student
in a German-speaking country.
Ask and answer simple German questions, in
both speaking and writing.
Understand the main ideas in written and
spoken language.
Compare and contrast German culture and
traditions with your own.

Welcome back to the new school year
and to German 1! I am excited that you
have chosen German and am looking
forward to an exciting year with you.
German class will be a fun and
challenging course. My goal is to give
you the tools you need to communicate
and express yourself in German.
The best way to learn the language is to
practice, practice, practice!.
I encourage you to take advantage of
class time to interact with others in
German, ask questions and volunteer,
and to review your vocabulary at home.
Most importantly, be patient! You will
not understand everything, but you
should be able to find some of the main
points and figure out a way to respond
using the German that you have learned!

 How to be successful in German class:
WHAT DO I NEED FOR CLASS?
3-ring binder + loose-leaf paper
and folder
Pens and/or pencils
Index Cards
Dry-erase markers (optional)
MAKE-UP WORK/ABSENCES
You are responsible for material covered in
class and all assignments for the day(s) you
are absent. To make sure you have the
required material for your notebooks and
folders, please check the Absent Binder
from the day(s) you were gone. Find the
form and take any handouts with your
name on it. You have 1 day to complete
and turn in your missing assignments!
Be aware that you receive a zero for
anything done in a class which you skip.
Tests and quizzes must be made up shortly
after your absence, either during AO or
after school. Schedule a time with me!
Take responsibility of your own learning:
check the class webpage and get any notes
you are missing from a friend. See me if
you need additional help!
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
1. Show CHARACTER Treat yourself, your
classmates, and your teachers with integrity
and respect. Allow everyone to learn.
2. Be COURAGEOUS Try your best in class
and learn from your mistakes. Be honest.
3. COMMIT to your learning Be persistent
and work hard in class and at home.
4. Think CREATIVELY Be open to new
ideas and willing to share ideas with others.
5. CHALLENGE yourself Always strive to
improve and learn. Having a good attitude
will contribute to your success in this class.
ACADEMIC INFORMATION
Class time: You should be prepared to
begin class on time. Look at the board and
have your notebook and pen/pencil out
when the bell rings. When the bell rings,
stop talking and be ready to start class and
to speak and think in German.
Classwork/Homework: Practice is an
important part of learning a foreign
language and these activities give you the
chance to receive feedback and improve
your German. Vocabulary should be
reviewed on a daily basis. Additionally,
you will have periodic written or oral
assignments that will need to be completed
at home and must be turned in on time.
Always study for quizzes and tests and
prepare for skits/presentations!!!
Participation: You are expected to use
German in class. Try your best every day
and give your partner(s) your best effort.
Listen carefully during class and raise your
hand when you have a question or
comment. Participation points are earned
based on your attempts to speak German,
make the most of each activity, and interact
with others in a respectful manner.
GRADING PROCEDURE
For this class, we use a standards-based
grading system. These are the categories:
Interpersonal Communication 25%
Interpretive Communication - 25%
Presentational Communication 20%
Cultural Perspectives and Connections 20%
Final Exam 10%
CONSEQUENCES
There are both positive and negative
consequences, depending on your behavior.
+ Positive consequences include: student of the
week, time for games, small class parties, and
more privileges.
- Negative consequences include: detention,
parent contact, conference with parents, written
apology, or ISS. Cell phones and other
electronics will be taken up if seen during class.
**All school rules and policies apply in this
classroom. See student handbook for details. **
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
Be on time. If you come in
after the bell, your tardy will be
documented and you will receive
2 warnings. A third tardy will
result in a detention.
Copy down all notes from the
board and keep your notebook
neat and organized.
Healthy snacks and water will
be allowed in class provided you
keep the classroom clean.
Wait for the bell. Do not stand
by the door at the end of class.
You will be the last one to leave!
Language learning is a long-term
process and involves a lot of hard
work and effort. Making mistakes
(and learning from those mistakes!) is
part of this process. That is why it is
important that all work for this class
reflect YOUR work!
The consequences for cheating on any
form of assessment through the use of
online translators or copying from
other students will result in a zero as
per school policy. Parents will also be
contacted and a referral will be filed.
The use of online translators is
unacceptable. I want to see what you
are able to do with the language, not
what the computer produces. You will
learn far more by doing your own
work and can be proud of your
accomplishments.
One online dictionary/app that I
recommend using is www.pons.de
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
1. Cell phones and other electronic devices are
to be used only when allowed by the teacher.
For this reason, each day, cell phones will be
placed in the assigned area before the bell rings.
2. Students shall not use personal technology
resources to distribute or display inappropriate
material.
3. Students shall not use audio or visual
recording devices to photograph, video, or
record in the classroom without permission.
4.Students may not post any material that would
violate the privacy of others.
